THE CONSEQUENCE OF I G N O R A N C E

There was this event that occurred at the University of Ibadan in late 1991. The University of Ibadan has for long attracted visitors since it was first established as a college in 1948. Some come to see the citadel of learning that has produced many egg-heads and administrators. Others come to see the animals in the zoo just for the purpose of amusement and relaxation. The Zoo, has for long attracted adults and children, especially on national holidays and during periods of religious festivities.

But there was nothing special about this particular day – there was no national holiday, there was no special religious celebration. The day was calm and ordinary and the Zoo workers rose early to feed the animals and prepare them for the visitors. Unknown to them the day was not to be ordinary as it began.

Visitors began to stream into the Zoo early and there was one who seemed very harmless. He had come into the Zoo dressed in flowing white garment, with a white cross in his hand. His intention did not look immediately suspect. Very religious people had in the past taken time off their ventures to see the beauty of God’s creation.

There are many animals and birds in the Zoo that attract different kinds of visitors. However, there was this particular sight seer who was attracted to the Lion’s Den. He moved straight to the Lion’s den and in a brief moment of reflection thought about prophet Daniel’s victory over this animal. He then looked to the right and to the left. There was no Zoo attendant nearby. He thought again about the God that is the same yesterday, today and forever and concluded that this was time to prove that this God has not changed.

In a very quick move and with his cross still in his hand, he climbed into the Lion’s “den”, to supposedly demonstrate the power of the living God. This was the first time a curious visitor has crossed the Lion’s territory. Nevertheless, the animal remained calm but surprised. The Lion had just been fed with a life goat and could not be bothered.
The august visitor began to scream and thrust his cross at the Lion. The Zoo attendants were attracted to the scene. So also was the Lion which felt threatened enough to grab the intruder by his neck. It instantly killed him and dragged the dead body to a corner of his cage.

This was not merely a senseless death. It was a foolish action. First, Daniel did not throw himself into the Lion’s den. Secondly, he did not subdue the Lion by his power, for “….. God ….. sent His angel who shut the Lion’s mouth that they have not hurt me …..” (Daniel 6:22)

Besides, God had to deliver Daniel from the snares of cruelty, jealousy and injustice, if he was to remain the true, faithful and just one.

The incident narrated above was totally different from the biblical example. There was no conflict, there was no injustice to challenge. The dead man simply threw himself into the Lion’s cage. This action was not just FOOLISH, It was born out of IGNORANCE.

Child of GOD, with all your getting, get wisdom and understanding and be guided by the HOLLY SPIRIT OF GOD
