TRYING TO UNDERSTAND YOUTUBE'S MONETIZATION ALGORITHM - PART ONE
Things like this REALLY make me appreciate steemit!
It's interesting to see what happens when a company steps in and tells you what is, or rather isn't, appropriate material to potentially "get paid" for. Here on steemit, we really do not have to worry about this. Sure, people may downvote certain things, thus removing the potential payout, but steemit itself does not "demonetize" your posts.
On YouTube, though, it is a very different place. After recently being approved for monetization, it was interesting to scroll through my video history and see which videos were deemed inappropriate and labeled with a sentence reading: "This video is running limited or no ads due to content identified as not suitable for most advertisers."
Since you can request a "human review"of these videos for monetization, it leads me to conclude that some sort of algorithm was used when concluding the videos were "not suitable." For part one, I'll start with the most recent uploads that we obviously inappropriate.
BEHOLD, MY INCREDIBLY "NOT SUITABLE" VIDEOS
ODD MAN OUT - In this video I just ramble about how when I was a drunk, drug addict living an immoral life, I felt like a real outcast from society. Then, I fast forward a number of years and as a monogamous, married, sober, "white" male with children, I find myself just as outcast from society as when I lived the opposite lifestyle. I do mention that I'm probably just "holding back progress" at the end of the video, for a little tongue-in-cheek humor, but regardless, this is just not the type of video that advertisers want to be associated with, LOL.
MY CHALLENGE TO YOU - This one is pretty strange too, because I just challenge people to "live their lives in the present, so that when they get to the future, they don't regret their past." The video is only three minutes long, and I don't go too deep into anything, but I do share a bit about us choosing to be more self-sufficient and giving up on "the American Dream." I guess right about the two minute mark I do delve into retirement, pharmaceuticals, and other things for a minute.
BLACK RAT SNAKE - THE DAILY SNAKE - Some of the snake videos get kind of interesting. Most of them are monetized, but some random ones aren't. This is just a simple video featuring a black rat snake where I share some information about them. I honestly don't have much insight into this one.
GETTING BIT IN THE FACE BY A RACER - Plenty of monetized videos on YouTube feature people getting bit by wild animals, but this isn't one of them. This one was unintentional, but after the snake actually did bite me in the face, then I had my title and cover image. On the bright side, at least when I shared the video other places I did get an payout.
MY FIRST EASTERN HOGNOSE SNAKE IN ARKANSAS! - As I glanced through all of the "not suitable" videos I've uploaded, it seems like just about any time I've mentioned an "Eastern Hognose Snake" the video was marked "not suitable." I'm not really sure what words are triggering their filter, but for some reason the combination of those words appears to be a "no no." It could be something else, but it's a weird coincidence if it is.
HOW TO SEX A RABBIT - Yeah, any time you mention sex and an animal in the title, you may be asking for it. Interestingly enough, while the possibility of "limited or no ads" exists, an ad for B&H Photo popped up when I pulled this video up, so I guess it must be limited ads for this one.
I'll share a bit more about this later too, in Part 2, but I thought it would be fun to sort through my "not suitable" content and evaluate what YouTube/Google deems unworthy of supporting. Feel free to check these out and provide your own evaluations below if you want. I'm still new to all of this, so it's interesting for me to consider and try to figure it all out.

That is really interesting. I don't have any insight into the algorithm, but I enjoy your videos, so hopefully they figure out that they can make money off them, and then monetize them all.
Well, they only qualify for human review if they get 1000 views in a week, so we'll leave them "not suitable" for now. Thanks man!
Hum...very interesting. It is like you are doing it in the wrong order...what I mean by that this that most people that were big on youtube needed to find an alternative because of the censoring. Well you established yourself on a site that can't be censored and now you are "branching" out to youtube! Well as far as I am concern you should ask they they all get a human to review, I'm sure some of them will still be flagged but hopefully they will monetize more of your videos. Keep shooting and keep posting! :-)
Yeah, I do a lot of things out of order!
I was recently scrolling thru my videos and noticed this video had been demonetized.
I wanted to do a manual review but it said they only do that on videos with 1000 views in the last 7 days. The video had 781 total views. So I went to a Facebook group I'm a part of with several thousand members and petitioned them to watch the video and share it in hopes that I acquire the 1000 views in 7 days. Well I only received about 120 views in 3 days but somehow the video was remonetized! YouTube is weird like that.
