PLANTING A BED OF YARROW

in #gardening6 years ago

Gotta love growing your own herbs!

Helpful herbs can be a blessing for both our family and our animals. Yarrow is one common wild herb with many amazing uses, so we like to have some on hand. While we already have a couple plants growing in our herb garden, we wanted to increase on our hand supply, so we created another bed to plant.

After deciding to cut a walkway through some of our landscaping, we also crafted a raised be to sow with yarrow seeds. By adding in some soil, fallen leaves, and compost, we filled the bed prior to sowing our seed.

While people frequently direct sow herb seeds in their garden soil in the early spring, we decided to sow them in the winter, much like they would naturally be introduced to the soil in the wild once the flowerheads dried. Then we covered the bed with some straw and weighted it down with a few sticks. We will see what happens come spring, but hopefully we will have a bed full of yarrow for years to come!

Cool. Another plant to add to my list. Thanks.

Wow, so you are a full time farmer ? :)

When will they come up in the spring? Thinking of putting out some of the seed we bought from @sagescrub and @homesteaderscoop since they can be planted in the fall...

Short answer: anytime you like @nateonsteemit! Idyllwild already sowed her seeds in flats early fall, they came up and then pricked out into pots recently... She moved them into the green house to get more growth in the winter, although probably not necessary in our climate.

You can sow them in pots or flats anytime but you'll have to wait until the soil warms up a bit before they germinate. Since it's about wintertime it would make sense to wait until early spring to sow them unless you start then in the green house, cold frame, hoop or indoors in which case anytime the ground is not frozen. The ferny leaves will help make it easy to identify.

If you put some out now, maybe reserve half or more your seeds to try in the spring and compare notes!

Exactly what I was thinking! Sow some now, save some for later!

Thank you so much for your reply!!!! :D

I may try a handful of them indoors as well to get them a good head start :)

Nice job @papa-pepper! It was cool to see how you prepped the raised bed. Monster Truck was very helpful I see, good on him :)

I had never heard of yarrow before but after researching it I see it has all sorts of amazing benefits. I need to get some going in my garden!

Looks great and nice to see monster truck being his usual helpful self. Do you use yarrow just for medicine? It has such amazing healing qualities!

Beautiful garden bed :) I really like the rock border. Looking forward to see your lush yarrow leaves flowing over the edges next year :)
