CHICKEN PEN UPDATE # 1

in #ghsc8 years ago

This is a lot of work.

As we are transitioning from raw land and woods into a functioning homestead, a lot of work has to be done. In this video I share about how we started with thick woods and have slowly progressed towards building up our poultry pens, and making use of all that we can along the way.

With no prior experience in any of this, I've got my work cut out for me, but we are heading the right direction and getting things done, saving money along the way by re-purposing the waste of others.

CHICKEN PEN UPDATE

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Such a cool plan you have working here. I have a couple of friends that have something similar but on a much smaller scale. One’s able to have fresh eggs every morning. I’ve always wondered what a fresh egg tastes like. I’ve only ever eaten store bough eggs.

We love the fresh eggs, and actually have four varieties that we regularly enjoy: chicken, duck, guinea fowl & quail!

Wow! Lol. I’m pretty sure I’ve only ever had chicken eggs before 🤔 what do the other three taste like, if you don’t mind me asking?

So awsome! Are you going to put a top on that? And are you hammering the t post in by hand or did you get the special tool?

They are amazing! Like butter :). I never had em til recently, yum yum.

Speaking of amazing, we've been enjoying our own homegrown popcorn for three years now.

Your 'butter' mention made me think of it, which is also fun to make!

Oh nice! Can you grow that in Florida? Planning on growing few things but im a noob besides tomatoes and marijuana.

See, I need to experience that lol

Will snake proofing be part of the upgrade?

Not on the whole pen, but the coops should be snake proof when closed.

Chicken Tractors not working out?

Those were to be used until we got down to our land. We'll rotate them around the areas a bit anyway, but we wanted a permanent "coop" area.

Pretty awesome plans, @papa-pepper! You are working hard now so that in the future it will be easier and not spending a fortune on materials is helpful too. I can't wait to see hat the homestead will look like in a couple more years!

I can't either. It's progressing by the day!

The animals are such hard workers. It's really coming along. Very exciting to see your homestead grow.
Wish I was a good with a camera.
All the best to you Pepper family

We're making progress, which gives us hope. Thanks for the encouragement.

I can't get videos to play on my computer, so you may have answered this question. did you bury the bottom edge? Or have another plan for digging predators?

Also is there going to be a top? To deter aerial and climbing predators?

They look to be lovely large pens. How many birds go in them?

In 7 to 10 years move the poultry to a new section and use their old area for your vegie garden.
It will have built in fertilizer,
10 years later swap areas,

Undoubtedly this is a lot of work. I really like what you are doing in your field, it is a very good investment, the progress there is notorious. dear friend @ papa-pepper My congratulations for the whole family.
I wish you a wonderful day and a happy day of the friend
In my blog there is a message for the international day of the friend if you want to read it

This is such a cool property!! Sounds like you have a great plan for everything. Awesome how you use the goats as "lawn mowers" haha. How big is your property, you probably have said it before? looks like several acres. Good luck with your sliding door idea!
