CHASE YOUR DREAM UNTIL YOU CATCH IT (my childhood memoir 1)

in #untalented7 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemians, here I am again with another of my post. This particular post was inspired by @michelle.gent and @surpassinggoogle. So, I will be dedicating this post to the two of them.

By bringing in this two above mentioned steemians is something that really touched me emotionally when I was reading a post by @michelle.gent titled “If you like it, DO it!’’ and the comment of @surpassinggoogle to me in one of his post titled “Prelude To #untalented 3.0 & 4.0: What Does 'Love On The Brain' By Rihanna, Tell You? Are/Is Rihanna And Chris Brown, Back At It?” also got me thinking about how much I had wanted to become a footballer while in secondary school and it never happened despite all my efforts.

Departmental team(Standing second person from the right)

The dream was stopped then by my aunt (my guardian) because her mentality then was that, it only drop out that plays footballer and also most footballers are known not to be educated. To crown it all up, she also shares the view that there was no money in football as at then. Therefore, since she does not want me to be a drop-out or to be uneducated then I have to drop the dream of been a footballer.

I remember that particular day when I came back from school with a form to be filled by my parent or guardian to show their consent about my decision to play for a local football club which she refused to sign. Let me inform you that I had to keep some part of my daily stipend for some weeks in order to be able to afford this form because it wasn’t free. I was so excited and happy knowing full well that I was going to be a good footballer and I will also be allowed to join the team of my choice. But to my surprise, my hope and dream of becoming a footballer was dashed. The form was tore before my face, and the playing boot I bought was also ceased. It was a sad day for me as a young boy.

Church team (first person standing from the left)

The reasons why I feel I had a chance then was because I was a left winger (usually wears number 3 or 11 jersey in any team), and a good left winger are not always easy to come by in any team then and even now. For those who know about soccer, you will agree with me that the position (left wing) mentioned is not usually played by many footballers. This means we have few people playing that wing. If we are to take statistic of good footballers playing the left wing in the world, then you will further agree with me on the above assertion.

Youth Service corps (the first person bending from the left)

On this faithful day, my hope of playing football ended. I went on from there to play for the junior school team and the senior school team at various competitions. I also went on to play for my department team, faculty team and the school University team. But I never thought of played for any club either locally or professionally. After leaving school during my youth service corps days, I played for my platoon and we won the platoon competition then while we were in camp.

Youth Service corps (the person bending from the left) We won.

I took my time to explain the above because I want you to see how passionate I was about becoming a footballer, but like I said someone who does not even understand how much I wanted to play football killed that dream unknowingly.

Now, in this modern day every parent wants their children to play football because they now see football as a good business that can put food on the table. You can agree with me that footballers now make a lot of money Imagine if the parents or guardians of Lionel Messi, Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo had stopped them from playing football while growing up, won’t they be regretting it now? They allowed their children and supported them to achieve their dream in life.

Wish my guardian did the same to me then.

Most times you see yourself trying to become something in life and in the process all kinds of obstacles will be showing up to stop you from achieving that goal. But like @surpassinggoogle said

“Hahaha thank you alot. I am struggling but it will be out soon, I am sure. Music and every niche will happen under #untalented. We will attempt things at least, to see if we have something there. Many times, we never really know we had e.g. love for baseball cos we never held a baseball bat before, we hold it once and maybe that has been where it’s at along. So basically with #untalented, we will test things out and find new love or at the very least test things out” (unedited).

The above quote shows to me that even if you are stopped from doing a particular thing, don’t see it as the end of the road but search further within and you will see that there so many other thing inside of you that you have not explore. That is exactly what I did when the dream of becoming a footballer was dashed and after searching within I found out that I can actually do so many other things (multi-talented).

Painted Teacup

@michelle.gent in the titled write-up mentioned above also talked about how she was discouraged as a young lady about drawing by her teacher then in school. But now taking part in a competition on this platform that has to do with drawing by @opheliafu has really rekindled her hope again and I quoted her saying

“I started a Doodle challenge and I picked up my pens and threw my self-doubt to the winds and I had a go. When someone says "No you can't..."You have three words that can break that jinx. JUST WATCH ME!”

Pinterest

I could not say (just watch me!) that when I was asked not to play football because I was very young and could not take care of me. I was so helpless and immature. Nowadays, most parents now encourages their children to become whatever they want to be in life especially when they can also see the gift in them.

I still play football not as a professional but just for the purpose of exercise (keeping fit), and anytime I see myself on the field I always remember those good old days when I was young, strong, and determined to be a footballer (Lol). My son right now is not showing any interest in football though still 6 years old, but whatever he wants to become in the nearest future, I will be ready to support him to achieve it. He can dream and I will be right beside him to help him chase that dream until he catches it and get fulfill with it.

We Heart It

My advice to you all, WHEN YOU HAVE A DREAM makes sure YOU CHASE IT UNTIL YOU CATCH IT. Dreams do come through only when you keep believing and working towards it. Never stop dreaming because in it is your future.

you are a great father.... you want to help your son live his dream. not all fathers want that... i think this credit goes to your aunt... she neglected your choice and now you know how that feels. and you won't make that mistake with your son.
i am a glass half full kind of person. i try to see the good in everything.
i guess i found this good thing about your aunt who was not supportive....
ha ha ha

ok @masummim50. You have a point there. At least the same mistake should not repeat itself with my son or daughter. Thanks for dropping by

Hello @optimistdehinde

Wow... this is so inspirational! Thank you so much for sharing your story.

Dreams are indeed meant to be chased until it is achieved. Imagine if all the great scientists gave up before they achieved thier dreams, we won't have almost all the basic inventions we overlook and enjoy today!.

Thank you for reminding me to continue to chase my dreams.
God bless you
Steem On!

@melanie00

@melanie00. Really happy am able to do that. Thanks for dropping by.

I can totally understand how you feel because i was stopped from playing professionally too and it hurts. The lesson to pick from this is, don't be like the person who hurt you and also make bette choices with your own children. We can't go back to make a brand new start but we can make a happy ending and correct things. Nice write up. So many lessons embedded in it. Kudos.

@olawalium. That statement is deep. Quoting you "don't be like the person who hurt you and also make better choices with your own children".
My children will enjoy something better. Thanks for dropping by

I am glad you love it and i trust you to make better choices. Anytime.

@optimisticdehinde I cannot imagine how colourful it would have been to see you in the super eagles jersey if you had been allowed to pursue your dream. I am sure your aunt would wish she had allowed you to play soccer then.

Dreams of today are tomorrow's reality. Don't kill the dream, execute it..

excellent point of view of your experience.
