Minty butterflies
Busy day today, so just a repost of some photos. Rain and heavy winds here today in my region of The Netherlands, so a look back at summer may brighten the mood.
These are photos of butterflies on a plant called water mint (Mentha aquatica), a close relation of spear mint (Mentha spicata), with which it can from a hybrid called peppermint (no, I'm not making this up). The area where this mint grows smells strongly of mint, and it is a good place to take photos of butterflies, as they seem to like the stuff.
A green-veined white (Pieris napi):

An Essex skipper (Thymelicus lineola, called European skipper in North America):

And, of course, the mint moth (Pyrausta aurata):

These mint moths are tiny, about 12mm across, and very active and difficult to photograph. Here's my favourite photo of one, not on mint though:

And now, off into the drizzle. Thanks for watching!

Ja, regen, af en aan. I hope your head cleared up. I'll post some flowers tomorrow to cheer you up.

Hier meer zomerse bloemetjes voor je.

dank je wel!
Stunning pics! Ocrdu! (;
Thanks!
Great great photos! I wonder if they were running on the SteemitPhotoChallenge #Flowers...
Great photos! It is funny to think of peppermint as a hybrid, but there it is. It's a big farm crop here in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Skippers are the cutest of all the butterflies!
Doesn't it make all of Oregon smell like mint?
You would be amazed in some places, especially when they harvest the mint. People complain about how invasive mint can be, but it sure smells nice!
So high quality ) I like )
Thank you.
Very beautiful and colorful pictures! :)
Thank you.
Very sharp. Did you use a tripod?
No, I only use a miniature tripod occasionally for mushrooms and small plants, all the rest is hand-held.
