Intricate Artwork Made from Buttons: The Loft Galleries

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Every 2 months there is a new exhibit installed in the building where we have a studio. Every first Thursday of the month, the whole neighborhood of San Pedro, Los Angeles becomes an Art Walk.

Downtown is full of art studios, but for most of the month you wouldn't even know that they are there. Come first Thursday, though; this place gets packed. Food trucks everywhere, live music, and people. Lots of people!

I am generally not a fan of a lot of modern art unless my BS meter is either malfunctioning or I can clearly see that a lot of thought was put into the piece/installation. This month I am not sure what to think exactly, but I do find the art interesting.

When I first walked into the room, I though to myself, what the hell am I looking at?

Then I got closer, and realized that these pieces are all made of strung together buttons of different shapes and sizes.

I couldn't help but wonder how one ends up possessing so many buttons. I think I will leave it as a mystery since that is more fun.

If nothing else, I have to admire the artist for the sheer amount of work that must have gone into putting these things together. This one makes me think of a sea creature, like coral.

The above shot includes the curator or the exhibit. These photos were all taken the night before the opening. I waited a day to post so that I wouldn't get into any trouble!

I really don't know what the metal piece is supposed to be. To me it looks like one of those things that you put on business roofs to keep birds from landing, but inverted.

I was kind of digging these shapes. Very organic looking.

If I made these, someone would probably come in my room and yell at me to clean of my mess. I guess that's why I'm not a fine artist.

This one looks like someone gutted a steampunk android and put its entrails on display for the public. Let that be an example to you rebellious robots out there!

This is another view of the coral piece. It looks as if it wants to swim away.

Check out this giant ball made completely out of soda can tabs. I think it's made by the same person who did the button sculptures, but there was no label so I'm not sure.

Here's a close-up shot so that you can see the tabs. Sorry for the blurriness!

There were also a few interesting looking paintings in the exhibit. I call these "Trying to look into your cup of coffee but some jerk is blowing smoke in your face".

Okay, so maybe I should never interpret art. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and my eyes are useless.

Check these things out, though. All I can think of when I look at these is TV series Twin Peaks. If you haven't watched the show, no point in explaining. It is impossible to explain.

Since it was Halloween, my friend James made the following sculpture to put on display in Amanda's studio:

Now, I hope you get a good night's rest after looking at that. Thanks for stopping by!

I find the string of buttons uninteresting, maybe if it resembles something it would be beautiful for me LOL. But the sculptured items there looks better because it is nice to look at as well as the paintings Sir @nuthman

Don't worry, I feel the same way. I feel like the idea was good, but they didn't take it far enough. It just looks like not much of anything.

another winner of an article pal. You sure to end up at some unusual events :)

Thanks! We do end up in a lot of interesting places. A lot of which I would never see without my other half basically forcing me to go to. But I usually end up enjoying myself, regardless.

Looks like Those buttons are put together through heavy skills,
Is there any chance to meet that Halloween sculpture? Hehe.
Great art my friend @nuthman

I love the button sculptures! Reminded me of Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch on Route 66. I'm not sure why I appreciate so much artists who work with untraditional materials and seem to carry an idea to the extreme. Extreme to everyone else, but not to them. They have a vision. They stick to it. They're immune to conventional ideas about eccentricity.
As for where to get all those buttons: when I was a child my mother had suitcases of fabric scraps, and other cases of thread spools. She had been a seamstress--tools of the trade. I imagine it wouldn't be hard to collect a suitcase of buttons. They're like socks--easily orphaned. If you don't toss them out, they can add up.
