Time: How It's Having It's Way With Me At The Moment & Some Great News!

in #life7 years ago

We all struggle from time to time. Sometimes it’s money, sometimes it’s relationships, sometimes, it’s time itself. Well, that’s what I’m going to write about today.

Many of you will know that I started a new job this week and it’s understandably taken a toll on me. All the new names, all the different technologies, software, architectures and the 2.5 hour return drive a day have drained me.

I’ve come from a bit of a career break, something like 6 or 7 weeks and aside from having an author gig on the side, time was my own. One of the particularly enjoyable aspects of this time off was being liberal with my interactions around my wife and our animals.

Now, I’m struggling to make a post a day on Steemit, something I would easily achieve prior. Now I could talk about prioritisation, “making the time”, burning the midnight oil etc. but I think these things fail to focus any pragmatic attention on the issue.

Some things in life just can’t be influenced or controlled by us. My grandfather used to say “what can’t be cured, must be endured”.

This lack of time has caused my physical exercise to drop to zero too. Now, I used to get up or 4:30 or so to get some exercise done but what you gain somewhere, you lose somewhere else and I’d find myself fatiguing during the of the day.
Another regrettable result is my inability to reply in a timely fashion to all the kind commenters on my posts. I pride myself on putting my best effort into engaging with every commenter who takes the time to write something related to my work and I apologise for falling behind on this.

There’s a Star Trek movie, I think it’s Generations, that contains the line “they say time is the fire in which we all burn”. I’ve always really resonated with that assessment. I think it aptly captures the reality of life. We are not always masters of our own time and, like death (I wont say taxes because I’d like to think that we will one day rid ourselves of state theft) we need to accept it as immutable in our existence.

Wow! Just to prove how unpredictable time is, just as I was looking to close my post with a summary, I got news from my best mate of 24 years that he’s just got engaged to his girlfriend! I’m totally stoked!

We don't know how much time we have and we can't always determine what we do with the time we have. Letting go of the need to control time and relaxing our relationship with it, I think, is not a bad way to go. Thanks for reading guys and may time treat you well.

Hi @tochukwumadubuko. Thanks for the comment. That's a good attitude in general but it's important to temper expectations of success as these can be damaging if not met. To aim for improvement is good. To be satisfied with any outcome is great.

I agree with you, you can't be a time master! All we have is plan an hope time will allow our plans to thrive. However, if we don't fight to accomplish what we plan, procrastination sets in turning us into headless chicken and firefighters. Appreciate your post.

Good point. Drifting can be damaging in the long term too @gigpen. It's a skill to balance. The saying "roll with the punches" comes to mind. Thanks for the contribution!

time is a valuable item, we must utilize every time we have .. !! the adage "states that time is money", "time is sword, etc ,, the purpose of the adage is use the time with the best !! great post!!

Completely agreed @qye. It's so short and made shorted by our obligations. Thank you for your input!

Good post! Enjoy vote :)

Very glad that you enjoyed it @majidawan thank you.

This is exactly where I am and have been all my life. My time and energy are consumed by the necessities of life maintenance and my creative dreams and goals are put on the back burner. I totally agree with what you are saying. Thanks, followed, upvoted and resteemed.

Hi and a big thank you @sophistryproof! Yeah you got in one. That's how I feel. I find the most tragic consequence of this scenario is not so much my persoanl unmet aspirations but the fact that I'm robbed of the time that's needed to maintain quality relationships, especially at home. It feels shallow to be away for almost 12 hrs a day. That becomes more like a housemate scenario than a family. I have to accept that this is how it is for now and just do what I can with the resources I have.

I know what you mean. We really have to balance things as best we can. No one looks back and regrets time spent with loved ones.

Agreed. And time spent with loved ones doesn't have to involve doing anything. Just being has value.

The same thing happening to me. The new job I have had taken toll on me. Limited energy for me to produce article writings after work, even during weekend, will have courses and outings that take up time as well. Everything back to priortisation and filtration of works. It's not easy and I'm still adapting. All the best! Maybe we can exchange formula next time when we get a better grasp.

Great idea @kimzwarch and good luck with the new job. Thanks for the comment. It's not easy sometimes!

Thank you , this really resonated with me. Time is often something that we take for granted and yet it is so precious. I love your quote from Star Trek “they say time is the fire in which we all burn” - so true!

Hi @seajai and thanks so much for the comment. I'm really glad my thoughts resonated with you. It's great feedback as an author.

I've found that we need constant reminders of how precious time is. We need shocks to the system as we tend to be beasts of monotony in the general case.

Thanks again!

So true. Unfortunately those reminders aren't always friendly!

Unfortunately that's true. I think they're necessarily unfriendly otherwise they wouldn't have the imapct required to steer change. Thanks for the commet @seajai

Mate, no one gets up 4:30 😠

Haha tell me about it!
