Make Your Own Open Source Cola
I am a huge fan of open source software. I run my laptop on Linux, and the applications I use on a daily basis are all open source.
Big respect to the wonderful ladies and gentleman throughout the world who work hard and share the fruits of their labours with people like me. Humans around the world collaborating, sharing resource and knowledge. Beautiful.
Happy to say the open source way (hmmm I'm going to save that line for a @dobartim poetry contest!) has been spreading its wings into a world beyond the confines of software. The 'source code' for plans, recipes, blueprints, even music and film can be sourced from sharing communities around the internet. How many use pixabay to source photos for our blog articles?
WARNING - IF YOU'RE A VEGAN, GLUTEN FREE, TOFU LICKING ORGANIC FOOD FASCIST thanks for reading this far, but this isn't the blog for you my friend, you're not going to be happy at the next part!
But Cola ? Hell yeah. I first came across this a number of years ago and never got around to trying it because to be fair, some of the ingredients were a little hard to source, and it's not easy to make. I will try again, especially if I see some of our community giving it a shot! Its open source so the instructions were freely available and modifiable.
So how did this come about?
A few years back, a company in Canada called Opencola started the movement as a publicity stunt to promote their software design services but it kind of backfired when the company became more famous for the drink than for its coding expertise! The original cola website is now run from Japan, but thousands of modified recipes and sites sprang up, i'll list some at the end of the article. The popularity comes from the fact you can imitate the big brand stuff for yourself at home and create a no-brand, no logo product but as you will see, the instructions read more like a science experiment and some of the sites give scary warnings about hazardous chemicals and only using glass and stainless steel utensils. There is a LOT of potential for a serious kitchen trashing!
So, here is one recipe I got from the net which I believe is the closest to the original.
WARNING *** ok, here I go. There actually are some slightly dodgy chemicals and reactions go into this so be careful. Boring bit over....
Firstly, you need to make the not-so-secret flavouring, and for this you need to mix together in a cup:-
3.5ml orange oil, 1ml lemon oil, 1ml nutmeg oil, 1.25ml cassia oil, 0.25ml coriander oil, 0.25ml neroli oil, 2.75ml lime oil, 0.25ml lavender oil. Add 10 grammes of gum arabic and 3ml of water and then mix it thoroughly in a blender. Put it in a glass jar, seal it up and pop it in the fridge.
Now its time for the magic to happen, let's make the syrup....
In a 4 litre container, you need 5ml of your secret formula and add to that 3.5 tsp of 75% phosphoric acid or citric acid. Add 2.25 litres of water before throwing in 2.25kg of regular white granulated table sugar (if you hadn't noticed, this ain't the diet version lol) and start mixing. Next, add half a teaspoon of caffeine and 30ml of caramel food colouring and keep stirring until its all combined and mixed up.....
Finally, we can sup some...
Just mix one part syrup to 5 parts carbonated water and hey presto, Bob's yer uncle, Fanny's yer aunt you have made Opensource cola. If you're totally stuck in the 70's then I have no doubt you will still have a fizz fizz Soda Stream to make your life fizzier and easier...Am I the only old person to remember them?
So, that's how to make Cola. We could call it Steemit Cola or perhaps @grumpycat might make some Grumpycat Cola so he can enjoy a refreshing homemade beverage as he takes a break from the arduous task of flagging people ;-)
More reading for you.
Open source Soda
Just had a look at this site, its like 'Breaking Bad' of the Soda world, pipettes and cooking stuff up !! Have fun.
I bet Coca-Cola and Pepsi would shit themselves if they read this. NOT! but if it does taste like crap, then you can always use it as toilet cleaner. Cola, if nothing else is versatile.
Great article. Not a fan of cola but enjoyed reading your writing. Very well written
thanks mate , was just for fun :-)
I do not drink soda, and even saw how Coca-Cola is used as a detergent. Such a recipe raises doubts)). Thank you for describing this.
Good morning :-) Cola is perhaps not the best example, but its a good way to fight back at the huge brand names that dominate our lives! Its funny to deconstruct such a popular product and do it yourself. It also shows how unhealthy it is :-)
