The Device
Alex was staying at a cheap little nothing of a motel near the airport, off I26.
It was late and Alex was tired, but sleep right now would be dangerous. Instead Alex waited. He waited for a text from an unknown and untraceable number.
He had never met or spoken with the sender but knew what the text would be ahead of time.
The text would be 8 numbers and that would be all. What the 8 numbers were and the order was unknown to Alex.
What was known, was, that when the 8 numbers arrived, grid coordinates, he would have to bust ass to get there and pick up a package.
Alex was a man of action and the waiting was painful. Meg was close by and he gently caressed her shape in the darkness of the motel room.
Meg was his Glock31, .357 sig. She was well made, light, reliable and fast. Alex and Meg had been together for a long time. He needed her for his job. She was his safety net. It was comforting to feel her cold steel against his fingertips.
He had given her an upgrade with a 3 small added pieces. The pieces arrived in a small yellow envelope with Russian post marks labled "bicycle parts". The install had taken a little sanding and less than half an hour.
The new components allowed Meg to have what Alex like to call a "happy switch". This allowed semi-automatic fire when the post on the rear of the slide was pushed left. When the post was pushed right it allowed fully automatic fire.
Alex liked his guns and his cars fast.
His phone buzzed.
"Lets Go" he said to the dark and empty room.
