Hey Steem Fam!

Today’s post is a little different than normal...

For today I am presenting you with a mystery plant!!

Angelica sinensis, aka Dong Quai, is a warming herb for the womb. It nurtures the womb and is called Women’s Ginseng in China where it originated.

I have used this herb and loved it!!

It’s a superb emmenagogue, promoting blood flow, and is a tonic for the women’s reproductive system, building blood and acting in a beneficial manner.

That’s what I was hoping I had here...

But! The photos pictured here are not Angelica sinensis, but a mystery Angelica!!

Here is the story:

Over 40 years ago, a woman from Texas moved to the Ozarks. She bought a large piece of land that came with some cows.

She tended the cows all year, sold them and actually paid for much of the land. It’s a beautiful water front property. As spirit would have it, her life winded and grooved into being a Chinese medicinal seed grower! One of the first of its kind in the United States! A team of farmers worked with her and she collaborated with many people who are now famous in the herb world.

These plants remain on her homestead, though she no longer sells seed. Being the plant loved, geek, freak I am, I trade work with her sometimes... for plants.

The plant pictured above is one such plant I trade for... Angelica... not quite sinensis...

Now, here’s the catch, if you would be willing to find out what plant this is for me... there would be a handsome bounty in it for you.

Herbalism Steven Foster visited our area last fall and gave an herbal talk. An herbalist of renown, who has traveled the world and who was there in the beginning of her seed escapades, I thought he would know the name of this Angelica.. but alas! He didn’t! I presented the herb to him and he didn’t know!

Can you, dear reader, find it out?

You will need to look at it as a Botanist... taking note of how the leaves attach to the stem, the shape of the leaves, flower head, etc.

Who is up for the task?

Perhaps someone in the @naturalmedicine group?

Hello, I resteemed this mostly to help me keep an eye out to learn more about this plant. It reminds me of something I have seen before.

Love

Thank you! I appreciate that 💚🌿

Oh, how good of you to show us what it looks like. I was just reading about angelica, from a book called Sacred Plant Medicine, by Buhner. The book mentioned angelica as one of the four primary medicinal plants, correlating with the four directions (in Native American culture), and angelica was associated with the East - old age, white buffalo, sage wisdom, etc. I haven't seen it first-hand until you showed us here, so thanks.

For safety, I just want to say that there's a slight similarity in appearance to western hemlock (the most poisonous plant in North America), so it feels important to mention here. I know hemlock from a book project I was researching. It's very different to angelica, of course, although there's a similar bunching of the white flowers.

Yes a favorite of mine!!! As rawutah says too, osha is in that book as well and it’s a favorite of mine! Thank you for mentioning hemlock here, a worthy note! Be careful wildharvesters or budding botanists :)

Buhner is a total fav. I remember that chapter on Angelica... really touched me 💚🌿

such a good book! when i think of angelica....i always think of osha. two of my favorites! thanks for the warning on hemlock. yah...we hunted for about two years...before we located osha. walked passed TONS of angelica...and hemlock...at lower altitudes ...before finding osha...above 8000ft...sub alpine. ini and wren...are also huge fans...of buhner. :)!!! cheers brother...and thanks for your words today! bustin' out the buhner books.... :) here's a post...we made on osha...for your identification pleasure. heading up the mountain on our yearly hunt...next month. we will send ya some ini and wren! thanks for all you share! https://steemit.com/nature/@rawutah/rocky-mountian-bear-medicine-wildharvesting-osha-root-ligusticum-porteri

Checked out your post on osha. Yeah, man, you really know your wildcrafting. Thanks so much for spreading the good word about these medicinal plants. Cheers to you and your journey.

awwwww....thanks for your words and for being here...bro. i'm just a student....and learning more each year. i look up to ini and wren...as they work with a LOT more wild ones...than i have ever dreamed of. living among them!!!!! check this post out they made on wild goldenseal. https://steemit.com/homesteading/@mountainjewel/dw7o0x4v

cheers to you too dear brother. blown away...by your posts...and your documentary about your dad...and life after. "life after life" just BLOWN away!!!!! you're a blessing to this earth..and this blockchain!!!

Is it possibly American Angelica?

angelica archangelica? It doesn’t have the purple stem. Do they all?

I have read that it will cross with another variety and you have a new plant. I think that is possible in some areas. This is intriguing... I love a good mystery.

Yeah amazing!! What he said ^ ;)

Here's what my 'trusty' app says about this plant: (would love to hear what you think!)

Truly fascinating!! Looks promising! 😍

Wow! That might be it! I’m on the road right now, but I’ll look further into this!! Thanks 😘

Oh cool! Can't wait to hear more 😁

I found this plant earlier this summer. I posted it but never figured out what it was. Flower head looks very similar. I was unable to find additional photos. I think I remember where it is. Maybe its worth a return visit.

Thank you! Yes visit it and take more pics for better id! 🌿💚

I returned but sadly these plants have dried out with much of the rest of California over the summer. Not very useful in identifying. If they are the same plant, they grow very early here when there is still water and before the summer heat hits. @mountainjewel

Hm, this grow everywhere in our yard. Or not exactly this, but some angelica. I didnt know its a magic-herb :D Maybe time of harvest is coming! Thanks for the tip!

Sorry, the tip is higher then your deposit.

You are welcome! Many species in this family/also lookalikes! I’m curious to see more pics
Of the one in your yard :)

Okay, tomorrow i can make some photo (its 9pm right here, and dark), but we have brown, not green, i think, its ripe, or simple old.

hmmm...that's fascinating....steven foster didn't know. could it be a hybrid of some sort? i'll bust out some of my michael moore books...and see what i can find. i'll send the images to some friends off chain too. anymore shots of the leaves? is that their full size? interesting nodes and stems. lol...fun! if anyone asked me off chain a similar question...i would be bring it to you two...to help lol.

Yeah even the great foster didn’t know!! Haha he said he would look into it but must’ve forgotten as he never emailed me back. Maybe I’ll send him some of these pics and jog his memory! Hahha too funny you would bring it to us ;) lol it’s quite complex botany! The lead is full size I’ll see if I have more pics. It’s quite tall, full size like this, maybe 7 ft or more! 😍 would LOVe To know what you find amigo!! Thanks 🌿💚
