Southern Brown Bandicoot ...or should it be a Bandi Cute :-)
I live on a small block (1 acre) which, at the back, merges into the local bushland (forest). I am thus fortunate in having a plethora of wildlife right at my back door (Sometimes quite literally). Most of our mammals are nocturnal but on a cool cloudy day they will sometimes make an appearance. The Southern Brown Bandicoot, Isoodon obesulus, is one such visitor.
Bandicoots are marsupials. (Other marsupials include Kangaroos, Koalas, Wombats etc). Like a Kangaroo, they raise their young in a pouch. However, unlike a Kangaroo, the pouch opening faces backwards. They grow up to 36cm (body length). Their diet includes insects, larvae, worms, as well as some seeds and fruit.
