The Top 5 Reasons You Shouldn't be Reading Any Post Containing Words "Top 5" Consecutively

.

It's to the point where it would be quite trite of me to introduce this post with a satirical evisceration of the relatively modern genre of Self-Help blog posts, partly because this particular fruit hang so low a croquet mallet prove a necessity, combined with the fact that I don't own a croquet mallet (if you just asked why not you are the reason why not), and I mean I I have nothing to wear to something like that, with the final and primary reason of course being the fact that the shit I'd set out to prove sucks has already been well proven to both be shit and suck with extensive consensus. Regardless, unhappiness and lack of fulfillment is a big market and I want in on some of that existential dread money.

Leaving that be, I'd like to do a small series introducing some material requiring just a little more intellectual heft than a butchered bullet-point list of philosophical concepts boiled down to a single paragraph or even sentence, while still providing the reader with the motivation or whatever foul nutrition "Top 5 Ways To OWN Facebook Group Chat And Make Sure Everyone Knows Becky is a Lying Whore" provides to these starving readers.

I'll only be posting things that have had lasting, meaningful impacts from my own self-experience. So:

1 THING THAT ACTUALLY HELPED ME WITH OTHER THINGS (IN MY BRAIN)

"Self-Reliance"
By Ralph Waldo Emerson
Excerpt

"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the
conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide;
that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that
though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn
can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground
which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new
in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor
does he know until he has tried. Not for nothing one face, one
character, one fact, makes much impression on him, and another none.
This sculpture in the memory is not without preëstablished harmony.
The eye was placed where one ray should fall, that it might testify of
that particular ray. We but half express ourselves, and are
ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents. It may be
safely trusted as proportionate and of good issues, so it be
faithfully imparted, but God will not have his work made manifest by
cowards. A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his
work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise shall
give him no peace. It is a deliverance which does not deliver. In the
attempt his genius deserts him; no muse befriends; no invention, no
hope."

Ha! No one is surprised!

Personally, after reading this I started writing again after a couple years hiatus (for better or worse). An incredibly boring story, but it was just a matter of reading the right thing at the right time.

Considering Emerson essentially invented the blog format couple hundred years ago with his famous "Essays", it's only right that he be the author of the if-not-first-than-best self-help piece to be written. Though a little juvenile in tone and naivete and perhaps not currently in vogue politically "Self-Reliance" is an invigorating and energetic statement of purpose composed in Emerson's tender but fierce prose.

"Essays", as a whole, is my go-to-feel good book, Emerson possessing a palpable rejuvenating feature one could attribute to his inextinguishable state of jubilation, curiosity, and sincerity. Reading his essays feels like a brisk walk in the fall with your favorite insightful-absent-minded-genius-uncle, and is always a great palate cleanser.

A self help book that pushes you to work hard without cutting any corners is legit in my view. But all in balance, if its a work of love, then i'd say work as hard as possible... but if you are not attached, don't be a perfectionist... my two steem cents :)
