2 STEEMIT RANDOM QUESTIONS: What is your Steemit Resteem Rate? And Why Is Original Content Declining On Steemit?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I've recently noticed a lot of timelines now just resteeming other people's content and not writing their own original content.

Are we to end up like Facebook, where links are just reposted all day long?

First off;

What is my Steemit resteem rate? It's basically an indicator of your original content generation powers.

I for example have over 500 hand written posts and my resteems are currently around 10 resteems.

Therefore, 10/500 =2% Resteem rate;

Thus my original content generation rate is: 100% - 2% = 98%

Therefore 98% of my content is original content.

For other timelines I've noticed, the opposite is true.

They have a resteem rate of 98%!! i.e. only 2% of their work is original!

This is certainly not the type of platform we all want to build. I believe original content has been in decline due to the falling Steem price.

Hopefully this can recover over time to encourage new authors. With the new incoming inflationary measures via the hard fork to be delivered on November 16th, this is a distinct possibility.

I also believe the resteem button is a lazy option for the newbie and the old Steemit dogs.

I tend to limit myself to 1 resteem every 1-2 days as a rule.

I believe that the resteem button should be just like the number of posts i.e.a limit of 4 resteems per day to prevent spamming and to encourage original content writing by ALL Steemers.

Steem on my original contenters!

Ok, really stupid newb question- I don't see a "resteem" button anywhere? So by "resteem" do you mean just including a link to a previous post?

A resteem in just like a retweet in Twitter. Goto the bottom of any post and look at where the Reply button is. Next to is a twisty arrow ... click that arrow to resteem :)

Thanks! Mystery Solved :)

If you need any other help on anything @erolsommer drop me a line OK ... however simple!! :)

Will do! Thanks much :)

No problemo my friend :)

As far as I know resteem doesn't pay directly. Some accounts, I think they are calling themselves faucets pay others to re-steem certain post. It might be considered a form of advertising?

Those resteems feel like toilet blocking spam advertising to me! No likey!! They need to start a website for a Steem faucet instead - just like all the other cryptos do like BTC, UNO etc..

I am always reasonable (sometimes!)

First off, note that I'm not a newcomer to Steemit but I only post about once a week on average. I try to focus on quality rather than quantity. So I have 14 original posts vs. 4 resteems. That means my resteem rate is 4 / 14 = 28.6% and my original content creation rate is 71.4%. After realizing that resteems show up in my blog list, I decided to limit resteems to once a week at most, and only do it for posts that I deem to be extremely important and / or fit the overall theme of my blog. I agree that resteems can feel spammy if used too frequently, but if used thoughtfully in moderation I appreciate them as I often get introduced to new & interesting writers that way.

When you talk about original content declining, you have to be careful to define exactly what you mean. I don't feel that the rate of content creation relative to active users is diminishing in any appreciable way. If I look at the list of new posts, I still see them being added with regularity every few minutes depending on the time of day. Rather, people are simply resteeming a lot, leading to cluttered feeds and perhaps an impression of less original content because you have to wade through so much resteemed stuff. The conclusion I draw from this is simple: people need to stop resteeming so much. Use that feature sparingly for maximum impact, in the same way you would a tactical nuclear warhead.

Excellent resteem stats there @cryptomancer; I meant quality content creation, as a lot of curators tell me the landscape is a bit denuded at the moment, although with the new inflation changes in favour of quality writers, I feel a new season rising for us writers ;)

Okay, I see what you mean. I spend a bit of time each day looking for quality content by new authors, but have noticed it's not easy to find stuff worthy of voting & commenting on. After a few minutes of that I usually seek refuge in the tried & true favorites that populate my feed. I know I can always find good stuff among the established authors I follow.

I've also noticed it's very tough to get new followers now. A couple months ago I could pick up a couple new followers every day just by commenting on stuff as I usually do, but now it's a struggle to get a couple new ones per week. This may be because I need to expand and start looking at more posts outside my core domain, but when I try to do so I run into that difficulty in finding quality posts again.

Well, onward and upward as they say. I'm not particularly discouraged by these trends, it's important to keep a positive mindset and realize that it's still early days for Steemit. I'm quite excited by the proposed changes in how Steem works; will be very interesting to see what effect that has!

I share your views on followers; mine have slow to a complete halt in the last week; and for a few days there they even REVERSED!!

I think November 16th will be the start of an exciting time for Steemit ... ONWARDS!!

The insightful @mindhunter - thank you for that boost! Another post coming soon ... 'GLOBAL JOURNALIST PART #2: Where Do Those Interesting News Stories Comes From?'

That's my graphic :D !
Thanks for sharing !

I hope you like the new EDIT: below your image ;)

Maybe the new inflationary measures will even get the whales to start writing! LOL!

I'd love to see @smooth produce a yoga video :))

@smooth does too much Witness work; so I don't think he's the stretchy bendy type.

I think you might be right ;)

(Some of his comments look waaaay too stiff! Sorry @smooth! Love you!)

I'm sure he won't take offence from the @mindhunter

Hi @mindhunter, I just stopped back to let you know your post was one of my favourite reads today and I included it in my Steemit Ramble. You can read what I wrote about your post here.

you can't tell people what to do.

Just wondering where you can find the resteem to original post %. I just started and a few pages to get the Steem say resteem, so I have. But been looking to write more articles of my own.

That would be a nice new feature. I had to work it all out by hand scrolling through all my posts! Bit of a pain but I got there. A SteemStats feature within Steemit would be good :))

... sounds like a post brewing there for someone ... ;)

I have a quite a low resteem rate, I am not averse to it just dont want to clutter up peoples feeds but I have noticed what you say that there is a lot of resteemed content out there. Its very bizarre.

@meesterboom - well done on being a well behaved Steemian ... I'm still searching for my single resteem of the today??

Hehe, tis still early. I am sure something will come up later!

I might pass by your timeline later ;)
