The Drivel we love

in #life6 years ago
Interesting word, interesting insult. If I'm to be honest every time I've seen or heard someone use that word I've always chuckled a bit. Not because I don't know what it means, but because it's always accompanied by some unwarranted visuals.

Yes, because yes is different than no

I think that just about sums it up. Those who at times say a thousand words, but say nothing at all. Line after line of beautiful nothings that may or may not rhyme, but maybe merit less than a dime. Did you notice what I did there?

Anyways, I know why drivel works, it works because we can assign meaning to it, we can project our own emotions right onto the nothingness, the banality, and thus find ourselves agreeing profusely. However, if you were to ask two readers sitting next to each other, what they just read, they would find themselves experiencing different realities all together.

I've tried to describe drivel, plenty of times actually. I've used adjectives signaling irrelevance, but they are not always right, not always. Drivel can be relevant, yes it can, I've seen it with my own eyes. If this was not the case, Why do we have so many self help book on the selves? Why are they so popular?

The promises are plenty, the applications, the pragmatic steps to take, none existent. "Do you want to stop worrying? Yes, all you have to do is stop worrying, that is all." The chapter closes, the lesson is over, and there we are flipping back and forth to see if we missed something, but no, we did not.

So what does this say about us, the sapiens, the wise creatures that "rule" this planet. Are we really that smart? Are we really that dumb? How does this work? How can we be smart enough to fool ourselves? Is that not a paradox in itself.

Of course it is, remember.... I said yes, because yes is always different than no. But here lies the last question. What did you just read? Drivel?

Direct communication can be confronting for some. Interestingly, it is the most efficient way to use language. Good communication is swift, concise communication.

For some reason, your topic of drivel made me remember this:

I freaking love that... I have a twisted sense of humor, and inane things entertain me so much at times

Damn you, was that total drivel!?

One of the most acclaimed actors in the fifties and sixties was Ingrid Bergman, and she once explained that what she would do is nothing, just be. Then viewers could just project all their own emotions straight onto her.

To be fair, you rarely do that. You generally take a stand about things you care about.

In fact, what you generally do is the exact opposite of drivel. Drivel is meaningless bullshit that sounds challenging.

What you do instead, is say something challenging, but in as non-confrontational way as possible.

That is, youallow people the peace of mind that drivel provides, while in fact smuggling in some challenging content.

In challenging the self-help books we're all addicted to, you're actually being quite challenging, though self-deprecatingly labeling your own post "drivel."

Always consistent. :)

What would be an interesting and impossible way to classify information is being able to track what leads to real world changed behaviours. I would suggest that it isn't the lists of what to do, but the information that one must ponder until a greater and personal truth is met and realised. As you said, two people can read the same piece and have vastly different experiences. One might have mouldy cheese, the other the foundations for penicillin. The difference is the willingness to be curious enough to find out what may be there. There may be nothing, but to a curious mind, even that is something of value.

Love the analogy and of course I agree. That being said, I've also read tomes of posts on here and other places that leave me thinking I had water for dinner, but it still took two hours of dining.

I guess those inspired my strange post.

I've also read tomes of posts on here and other places that leave me thinking I had water for dinner,

The operative component is "leave me thinking". What did others leave thinking who read the same piece? One man's drivel is another man's source of wealth.

this is such drivel...

That is a piggy, is his name drivel too?

Hey @meno, another good and connected word for you; " filibustering"!!

We have the power to change much with our thoughts - thanks for another thought provoking post!

oooh filibustering... i like that word too... thank you for reminding me!

Ted Cruz read Green Eggs and Ham one time when he was practicing it.

Your post is like the 5th one I see today about something positive and talking about change. I am taking this as a message to myself of what I need to be doing during my rough patch. I think it is time that I not only read it but also act upon it. Thanks Meno <3
