I like trains and especially locomotives. I remember as a child I went on trains with steam locomotives. I liked them but they scared me! Your blog reminded me of childhood, thank you. $trdo

The trains I remember riding on as a small child were electric with an overhead line. We had a freight train track very near our house but a steam train going past was a rarity by the late 1950s and all the engines were diesel-powered.
I can see where they would be scary for a small child! Thanks for the Tokens!

With pleasure! In Romania steam locomotives worked in the 1960s, when I was 6-7 years old.

A few years ago they renovated one of the old railroad Depots in a nearby town. To celebrate they brought a steam engine out of storage and ran it across the state to be at the Depot celebration. It was in the dead of winter and it was amazing to see that train on the tracks! It doesn't happen very often these days!

Yes, such a locomotive is very spectacular.

Beautiful steem train track

Thanks! Glad you liked the photos!

That looks like a fun place to explore! Cool photos, too, especially the steam billowing out of that engine. It's kind of amazing to think that we used steam as a primary source of power for so many years. Actually, have you ever taken the Badger across Lake Michigan? That ship was steem powered, but eventually got converted to diesel.

I'm glad you were able to get around and over the tracks on the scooter. Some of those places aren't very accessible.

I loved everything about Savannah and when Jim was by my side he made certain that I could go anywhere I could possibly wish to go! Man, I miss him.
I have never crossed the lake on the ferry. I've been on overnight ferrys in Greece and many shorter ferry trips, but never that one. Maybe because I love the drive around the lake!
130 years ago there were steemer boats on the river here and you could board in town and they would take you up river. Too bad there is no public transportation here these days!

The Mississippi River used to have quite the fleet of steam-powered paddle boats, too. That would have been something to see!

Ive stood on the banks and watched the Mississippi Queen go up river, and as the calliope music played I was whisked away to that earlier time. 🎶

The guy I took trombone lessons from as a kid used to play on steamboats. That would have been the 30's and 40's. He was in his 90's when I knew him.

Cool! I bet he had stories to tell!

You would have found lots of wonderful photos there!

Yes! : ) It looks like a lot of fun.

Now that's steem power ...:-)

They are beasts, aren't they?

LOVE these photos.

How interesting it must have been to be able to be there and see it all. I have seen a program on a station like this before and thought it was so neat how all of it worked.

Loving that last photo, with the reflections of one building in the windows of another.

Thanks, Jacey! I loved being in Savannah.

It is a great museum to visit if he ever gets the opportunity. There is a good one here in Wisconsin, too.

Finally did this for you..

'Hey babe, it's holidays! I know, let's move 35 metres of mulch!'

The train is a beautiful thing, all that steam. Your photos give the place a very exciting feel too. Then we get to the quieter photos, and can imagine the hustle and bustle that must have been there when the trains were not only fired up for show.
I really enjoyed this post.

Thanks for your great comment! I'm really glad you enjoyed this!

Anything to do with trains will attract me Melinda, we grew up with steam and electric trains, steam was my favourite.

The sooty smell, old wooden carriages creaking slowly swaying down the lines, best memories of childhood, thanks for taking us down a walk in memory lane.

There are a few places in Wisconsin that do steam train runs for tourists to ride on. It's usually an hour or so ride, but it feels like stepping back in time.

My dad used to tell of his mom dropping whatever she was doing and frantically racing to get her freshly dried clothes off the line before the steam train came through town and sprinkled everything with bits of soot.

We have a couple of steam trains privately run, perhaps it is time to go and enjoy once again. Sadly this will not be the same as what we had, more commercial as a sight seeing outing for a couple of hours.

That's what we have, too, and you are right. It is not the same.
