My bird of the day is the American White Pelican.. These birds are huge with a 9 foot wing span and weighing around 30lbs.
Pelican populations are in decline due to the use of pesticides and the draining of Wetlands. I saw quite a few in Iowa at Lake Red Rock, below the dam. They were busy catching fish. Their bill can hold 3 gallons of water when they scoop up a fish, then the bill is pointed downward allowing the water to drain, and then raised and the bird swallow the fish.
A group of pelicans can be called a "brief", "pod", "pouch", "squadron" or my favorite, a "scoop".

Love that second shot! Pelicans are such cute birds; unfortunately we don't have them here, but been lucky enough to see quite a few on my travels!

In the second picture that bird was landing on the water and those big orange feet looked like he was water skiing. I'm glad that you both liked the photos!

It is happening to so many of our creatures. It is worrisome.
