Can the brain itself feel pain?

in #science7 years ago

It's an interesting question. Our bodies feel pain because of various pain receptors all over our bodies, but does our actual brain itself feel pain?

Actually, there are no pain receptors present in our brains. However, the covering around our brain, also known as meninges, periosteum, and scalp all contain pain receptors. The coolest part is that if surgery is performed on the brain, it won't feel any pain!

We all know that our brains help us to detect pain. If we cut our finger for example, pain receptors in that area will activate to tell us we've been injured. Within fractions of a second, an impulse is traveling from the receptors through nerves in the spinal cord all the way to your brain.

So although we have a nervous system capable of detecting pain, our brains themselves do not feel pain.

From an evolutionary perspective it makes sense that the brain cannot feel pain. If the organisms brain comes into contact with something then that basically means that the skull has been fractured and the organism is likely dead. So there is no real point for the brain to feel pain.
Although...I was not aware that the menings had pain receptors. That kind of goes against what I said above. Very interesting. I wonder if it has to do with a sort of warning system against damage to the skull. Like pain receptors on both sides of the skull creating a sandwich effect so that skull damage can be located? Interesting post. Gives me something to think about
