Summertime in Brittany, France
One of my fondest memories was spending a summer in the town of Cancale, Brittany. When you arrive there, the air is permeated with the smell of the ocean. The first thing that caught my eye were the boats sitting on the sand during low tide. It is one of the most unique sights.
We stayed in a cute little gite, or cottage which overlooked the waters.
Cancale is known for oyster farming and during low tide, you can walk right up to the oyster beds.
Just a word or precaution, it does get messy.
In town, their specialty is buckwheat crepes which are called galette. You can order them sweet or savory or do what the locals do which is order one of each!
Of course you can't skip the seafood, especially oysters and langoustines. The seafood here is simply the best I have ever had.
While in Brittany, we drove over to Normandy to visit the famous Mont St. Michel which was built in the 8th century. As we approached it, the abbey was massive and stunning.
At the base of Mont St. Michel, you will find lots of gift shops and restaurants. As you walk up the stairs, you will start to see the splendor of the monastery.
At the top of the abbey you can see the views of the bay.
Cancale is easily accessible by Tgv which is the high-speed rail from Paris. The trip took only a few hours. For a small beach town, Cancale has lots to offer. You can spend your days swimming at the beach, going for strolls or visiting nearby towns. The food is amazing and how can it not be for a place known for their famous butter, crepe, seafood and lamb. Bon vacances!
