Are the police working with the triads in Hong Kong? 香港警察跟黑社會勾結?

in #hongkong5 years ago (edited)

I've been writing about the protests in Hong Kong in the past month or so, but today I'm not going to talk about that. I want to talk about something more important. Something really brutal that has happened to normal citizens.

GOING HOME

On Sunday evening, 21st July 2019, residents at Yuen Long in Hong Kong were returning home. When they got off the train, there was a bunch of thugs in white T-shirts holding canes and sticks waiting at the station. They were targeting young people wearing black who were returning from the pro democracy protest. The thugs started lashing out indiscriminately at everyone, including a pregnant woman.

The residents ran back to the platform to get away from the thugs. The thugs followed them and continued lashing at everyone on the train. At around 0.34 in the video you will see a man lashing out at the screen and a woman screaming. She is a reporter at the station and ended up with 4 stitches on her shoulder and bruises on her back.

WHERE WAS THE POLICE?

When this started to happen many called 999 to report it. Some couldn't get through, some got disconnected and those who got through were told to stay indoors if you're worried. Some people went directly to the Yuen Long police station to report the thugs. When they arrived, the police refused to take their case and said they had to lock up due to security reasons.

Two policeman were seen walking away from the railway station when the incident started. No staff from the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) turned up and the residents were left to fend for themeselves. The police didn't turn up till half an hour later by which time the thugs had conveniently left. Needless to say the residents were all very angry. All the police did was to tell them to catch a taxi home if they were still worried. The police then left.

After the police left, the thugs came back for the second time. This time they used force to open up the gates and rushed into the station. 45 people were sent to the hospital with injuries, 1 is still in a critical condition and 3 in a serious condition.

WHO ARE THE THUGS?

The thugs are locals from Yuen Long and some are known triad members. Triads are the equivalent of the Italian mafia.

After the thugs left the train station they hanged around Yuen Long town. I don't know why the police still think it is safe for the the residents to return home by taxi after what they have been through.

During the early hours of Monday, the police where seen with the thugs in Yuen Long. No arrests were made, in fact they looked rather buddy together. These two photos were captured from and RTHK news video, an impartial news station in Hong Kong. You can watch the full video to see that I haven't just captured some biased shots.

The following day the press asked why the police did not make any arrest. The police said they couldn't see any weapons and you can't just go around arresting everyone in white T-shirts. As of 22nd July night time, 5 people were arrested for illegal gathering.

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE TRIADS?

Given what I have witnessed over the 24 hours, it is difficult to believe that the police were not involved one way or other. The police can't explain in a convincing way why it took them half an hour to arrive at the scene. They can't explain in a convincing way what was going on between them and the thugs in the video. They can't explain in a convincing way why they can't arrest the thugs for the attack when there are tonns of video captured by so many people.

It's not the first time thugs have used attacks to intimidate protesters in Hong Kong. And with way things are going, it probably won't be the last. With the government running out of ideas to resolve the whole situation, perhaps they think getting someone else to do the dirty work may help? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm right. Here's what the international media has to say.

Very sad to read this @livinguktaiwan. Little gets to me faster than injustice which is not properly and promptly addressed by the authorities people rely upon for their safety.

Do you see any reason for hope on the horizon?

My guess it might get messy for a while as there are more than one triad gangs in HK. Rumour has it they have upset another gang as they hurt some of their people in the process, but its all rumours. On Sunday afternoon there were some rumours circulating on internet that this might happened but people dismissed it as fake news. Then yesterday (Monday ) there were rumours there might be gang fights in the evening and many companies allowed staff living around the Yuen Long area to leave work early. Luckily nothing happened. So basically its a bit messy at the moment.

The police will have to step in somehow as this has escalated around the world now. I believe it was on the BBC 10 o'clock news last night. They have to save their own face some how and maybe make some arrests.

However, the wider issues that the protesters are fighting against would be a separate issue as that's down to China. They do not tend to back down to citizens demands. They'll probably tolerate and hope this will all go away after the summer when the kids go back to school.

Thank you @livinguktaiwan. When I see posts about that part of the world and what is happening there, it is of real interest to me. It is always hard to know what is true and what is not. The news from so many nations, including our own, seems to be inclined more and more to propaganda than real news ...

My biggest interest is what China is choosing to do in that part of the world to establish control over whatever part of it is not currently under their control. Taiwan is certainly in that category. And, as far as I understand it, Hong Kong ...

What's happening in Hong Kong is so concerning :( I feel like it's a special place that will come to a sad end, and it will go into the fold of the Chinese rule.... sigh

Thank you for compiling all of these into one post, LUT <3 This event is of very important relevance to me, and I am glad that there are people like yourself that are speaking about what's happening and documenting it <3

Thank you spidey!! If my post can make at least one person aware of the issues, then I feel I have at least made one small contribution to the whole issue. Thanks for your support 😘

Thanks for making this unbiased post about what is going on in Hong Kong. I honestly believe in the end China will win out. There is too much money the country can spend on thugs and police that they will do anything for the country. Even if it is selling out their own people.

There is nothing to stop this but I hope there can be a peaceful resolution. Many years ago Hong Kong was a refugee area for those who did not want to be under China rule but had Chinese heritage. People flocked to Hong Kong for better prosperity. I know today it is a lot harder to migrate with so many world orders and weapnized armies to allow people of Hong Kong to find a place to leave in peace.

If there is a resolution to this I think it is China freeing the citizens of Hong Kong rather than oppressing them. Let them rule themselves and survive on their own. If the economy of Hong Kong struggles the people of Hong Kong will have to deal with the consequences without China intervening. The only thing China should do is uphold the independence of Hong Kong and not let any foreign country take control of the providence.

It would nearly be impossible to do as China rules with an iron fist. Yet to prove to the world that they can rule fairly having Hong Kong run self sufficient is likely easier than aggressive tactics on its people.

Hong Kong people is as much Chinese as the people in mainland China. Only difference is some prefer a different form of government.

Thank you for your comments @mawit07.

Hong Kong is China's golden egg and gateway to the world as we have the financial and legal infrastructure and framework trusted internationally. No other China city has this. We also have one of the highest foreign reserves in the world which is slowly being depleted due to all the over budget infrastructure projects. As such China will never let go of Hong Kong, for both financial reasons and lost of face.

In an ideal world, and what many are advocating for is for Hong Kong to be left alone to do our own thing. 😔

Thank you for dropping by, I appreciate it.
