Path of Exile: My first Hardcore run!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #pathofexile5 years ago (edited)

Another exciting update (for me, at least) about my Path of Exile journey. Last week, on finishing the Acts, I started feeling a little lost. I didn't really know what to do in Maps as the game doesn't hand hold. But my character was severely broken after getting the mandatory -60 points in all the resists after completing the Acts. So in trying to fix her, I made her worse. Instead, I spent some time just messing around and being social in game. @supersoju helped me get the hang of the Templar Laboratory Map device, but I also played a little with her so we could compare minions. lol She's playing Elementalist Witch to my Necromancer Witch. We should have done an in-game character selfie of both of us. I was telling her how I looked like a peasant with my plain tabula, and she looked liked a dork with her oversized helmet. In fact, here is a before and after, when I finally decided that it was time I put aside my tabula rasa. That is a chest that has white sockets for any spell combos, but the downside is that there is no defense. As you can see from the progression, CrankyOldWoman is looking much sexier I think!

BEFORE: Here, I was comparing myself to this big guy in town. I looked small and peasant-like.
image.png

Here, I was wondering where goldie got their gear, but even the guy in red looked better than me.
image.png

Oh, the lady on the right is definitely hot. Look, even the guy behind her seems to be checking her out!
image.png

AFTER: With the recent gear reconfig, I did drop the tabula rasa, which is well known to be a great levelling chest. I decided it was time I grew up and I settled for a 5 linked blue socketed chest. I quite simply needed more defense now that I am at the later stages of the game. While looks was not a factor in the switch, I do think she's looking cooler. Maybe one day she can be as glamorous as the golden girl above. ;)
image.png

If only I got a quick pic of @supersoju's witch. She really was cute in her oversized red garment and helmet that seemed to cover half her head. lol Anyway, her abilities are a little different to mine, such as she uses spell totem, these little statues you spawn in-game that do things for you, such as shooting the enemies with beams of fire! Me, I'm still running around while my minions (3 Spectres, 10 Zombies, 1 Golem and a Holy Relic) do all the work. She still has minions, so together we had a little army. I can only imagine what it would be like for a party of 6 summoners! Just to break up this post with something visual, below is a vid of my latest PoE home. I decided my old hideout was not efficiently set up for maps, so I decided to create a second one that I can switch to. On reaching the end maps, we all get a Map Device, so here is my new hideout. It's very different, and I miss how relaxing the previous was, but I can get used to this. Just for fun though, I stuck one of the Masters, an NPC who we can interact with for quests, in a cage! Poor Einhar, but at least I can still talk to him. XD

Anyway, in playing with the kooky cat lady(soju), it made me realize how fun playing with friends could be. Then I had others who wanted to join up to show me stuff, or as always happens, give me stuff. As expressed previously, I remain uncomfortable with this, and the reason is that it starts not feeling like it's my game where I am applying what I have personally learnt and independently making decisions. A lot of PoE players don't mind this style of play, and the sharing seems to be the norm. Many argue that it is more 'efficient', but it is not what motivates me to play. I enjoy learning things and experiencing things for the first time through my own means. But Path of Exile is a social game if you interact with other players, and an aspect of that is trading. I finally decided that I need to treat my Softcore account as my fun account. It's where I learn about the game and be social. In taking a more chilled and sharing attitude to that first account, I moved onto my next goal in creating a second character which will be my first attempt in Hardcore mode. This next stage of my gaming education begins with my new witch account, DoNotDieLinny. I don't think I checked the box for Solo Self Found, which was me not paying attention, but this is how I am going to treat it. This was going to be my first training run for @mattclarke's 24 hr PoE race next league.

With my Softcore character now relegated to the fun account, I continue to experiment and play with things. So a stat check for CrankyOldWoman: she's now at Level 73 and currently at Tier 4 maps. Her current deaths is at 482. I've come to the point of not caring if she dies, so that makes me a little slack. I guess I don't see the point in stressing over it, as I know she's fragile from the way I have built her. If I'm focused, she lives. But often I'm experimenting with stuff, not paying attention or stubbornly trying to beat the One-Shot-killing Syndicate guys. I still can't beat them after countless deaths! So I shrug it off and keep playing. I really don't get how people can say 'My character never got past act X.' What's so hard about loading up the game and starting again in Softcore? But people tell me that players get frustrated or simply cannot fix their character. I still don't get it, but apparently not many players persist with their first character. I remain fond of and enjoy playing CrankOldWoman. I continue to ignore all advice to follow a build for the better enrichment of my game. Meh, I'm still having fun!!

My witch has done 6 of 40 challenges. With every 12, you get a game reward, but every challenge takes a fair bit of time, so I don't think I have the time to get more than 12, if even that. Playing PoE requires a massive amount of commitment which I just cannot devote to it unfortunately. To give you an idea, the developers released recent stats on the current Betrayal league, and you can see only less than a quarter of players even get to the first rewards milestone.

  • 24.26% of players have completed 12 challenges and earned the Betrayal Helmet Attachment.
  • 6.19% of players have completed 24 challenges and earned the Betrayal Aura Effect.
  • 1.08% of players have completed 36 challenges and earned the Betrayal Cloak.

In trying to get to the 12 challenges mark, I am playing more delve. This is mining in PoE. It's quite fun, especially as you go deeper and the rewards are greater. I need to get to the depth 270 and also open 300 chests. I'm at around depth 60-ish and less than 50 opened chests, and it's beginning to get hard. Basically, you need to stay in the light because the dark mining tunnels will kill you. I got into some secret Vaal chambers as part of my delving, that was interesting. It looks something like this:

See all the dead bodies, I eventually joined them. Forgetting to use flares and panic meant the darkness got me.
image.png

Back to Hardcore and on the experimentation side, one of the spells I have been playing with is Freezing Pulse. I love it. There is something satisfying seeing the mobs and bosses freeze and then for them to shatter on next hit. I'm slowly getting the game mechanics, and as a result, paying more attention to how the gems interact. Decisions are quicker now that I can apply what I have learnt from my Softcore CrankyOldWoman to Hardcore DoNotDieLinny. When I was offered a reward to pick a spell Gem, where I previously selected Raise Zombies, I eagerly chose Freezing Pulse. The decision has set the tone for the rest of the play. I will say, going from Level 73 back to 1 took getting used to. You don't realize how slowed down the game is at the start, and I had to get used to wacking the mobs with my pathetic stick of a wand again. On the positive, I felt I used a lot of what I learnt from my first character, with the most important skill of all, that being: RUN AWAY!. I did that a lot, because I had nothing and was so weak. I needed to keep recharging back on life and mana. For this build, I'm aiming to play Occultist Witch which has more focus on fighting with spells than just relying on minions. I plan to still use zombies and spectres, but they are secondary to cold spells (Freezing Pulse) which I want to get up to a decent dps (damage per second), as well as having more focus on the fast recharging energy shield, an extra pool of hit points that get used up before the life pool.

image.png

It was actually quite funny when I decided to race to the end of Act 1 to hit the Act's boss, Merveil. She's the siren with a tragic love story. I ran into her cavern to kill her without even checking my zombies were with me. I got into the arena, only to discover I was alone and that they had died unnoticed by me. As a player who is so used to her minions, I had a moment of panic and feeling very naked. But due to the strategy I had taken from get go, my Freezing Pulse was good enough to beat the first version of her. I froze her a few times, which allowed me to sneak in some good hits. She then turns into her twisted version and her little babies come out. On killing her babies, I got some corpses onscreen, which allowed me to raise my zombies. These guys didn't live by the end of the battle, but they did their job by making it even easier for me to kill Merveil. I was honestly shocked at how much easier it was than I had remembered it when I played it the first time in softcore! It was tense though, I had to really focus and run around a lot, while not panicking and drinking from my life flasks unnecessarily. The only time I almost died in Hardcore for this first session was when I was running towards Act two's safe zone, the Forest Encampment. I got stuck in a pack of mobs with a big guy blocking me. Normally, as Level 73 CrankyOldWoman, I'd just phase run through him, but as Level 14 DoNotDieLinny, that was not an option! My life pool got critically low before I disentangled myself from that jam and raced to the town entry. Phew!

Here is DoNotDieLinny having reached the Forest Encampment at the start of Act 2. A good place to stop playing for now.
image.png

My goal for this first Hardcore run is just to finish the first Ascendency Labyrinth and be officially badged an 'Occultist'. Considering I died many times as CrankyOldWoman in the first Labyrinth, that is a big goal for me. I really hate the Ascendancy Trials and their confusing traps and puzzles. I especially hate the boss I need to fight three times! That is Path of Exile, repetition to see if you learnt the previous times. I can see myself being stuck in some corner in the labyrinth, confused as to why I am not moving and then being fried by the burning floors....

Finally, before I embarked on my Hardcore journey, I did consult with others on their opinions on Hardcore. I was a little weary of everyone preferring Softcore and seeming to be allergic of Hardcore. I got a number of responses highlight network instability and lag being a primary factor in preventing people wanting to invest in Hardcore. A lot of people didn't enjoy the stress of it. This was the best reply I got, which also covers why I should consider a build guide for Hardcore.

Here is the commenter's twitch account:

I will have a skim over a couple of builds when I feel more motivated, but I'd likely just do my own thing. I'll keep playing my own way until I hit the point where I get frustrated. So far that hasn't happened yet. On that note, I'll end this post. Thanks for reading!

Next time; we can take a selfie together in your new hideout.

It sure was fun to play together; even though it was only for a short period of time. Thanks for showing me your cool minions too; especially your spectres. I haven’t played since the last time I spoke to you in game. Though I did find myself a solar guard to check out its skills; but I do miss the large curtains and their laser beams. Pew Pew Pew.

Just for fun though, I stuck one of the Masters, an NPC who we can interact with for quests, in cage!

At first I thought I may need to call rspca on you for locking the monkey in a cage; though with locking Einhar …. Technically he locks those animals he captures (with your help) in cages too. Have you seen his dungeons? They are pretty cool enclosures for the captured animals.

Lol ‘DoNotDieLinny’
It is a little odd starting from the start and realising how squishy you are. I was thinking of trying out a new class for the hardcore practice run; but I am very fond of my elementalist. You are doing well for your hardcore practice run. I died at level 10 due to my carelessness while walking over the spiked traps. With my main; traps don’t really do much to me; so I never really cared too much about being too careful. Then I forgot at the time I was playing hardcore and I should be treating these traps with more caution; especially at a lower level. Then when I went to delete the character; I forgot to transfer some the goodies into the stash; oh well; it was only just a few useful things lost.

See all the dead bodies, I eventually joined them. Forgetting to use flares and panic meant the darkness got me.

Hahaha. Did you find my body in there too? It should be there somewhere; just look for a big bucket.

Next time; we can take a selfie together in your new hideout.
Yes, let's do that. I find the whole character thing hilarious tbh.

It sure was fun to play together; even though it was only for a short period of time.

We should do it again when we both have a moment. Run a map together. They seem to follow a format, so it should be easier to stick together. We might even get some of these challenges done together quicker.

Thanks for showing me your cool minions too; especially your spectres. I haven’t played since the last time I spoke to you in game. Though I did find myself a solar guard to check out its skills; but I do miss the large curtains and their laser beams. Pew Pew Pew.

What?! I've not gotten around to finding a solar guard, but they don't shoot?! That would suck. I prefer my curtain flame sentinals to other spectre options because they are ALWAYS working. My current ones are just silly ones I randomly picked because I lost my curtains at some point and wasn't paying attention. I went back to raise them, but could not find them! :(

People insist the solar guards are the best, but I dunno, my curtains were 100% reliable to shoot. Have you notice how hopeless some of the spectres are? They hang back and do NOTHING!

At first I thought I may need to call rspca on you for locking the monkey in a cage; though with locking Einhar …. Technically he locks those animals he captures (with your help) in cages too. Have you seen his dungeons? They are pretty cool enclosures for the captured animals.

I've not paid attention to einhar's home since going there originally. I guess he's less of a priority unless he appears for us to capture his beasts. I wish he would show up more often so I can get the 100 done for the challenge.

It is a little odd starting from the start and realising how squishy you are.
Very much this. And how unresponsive your character is too. I often pressed buttons and nothing happened, and then I realize its because she ran out of mana again. lol I had to consciously remember to NOT die for DoNotDieLinny. Like literally had to mentally chant and track the life pool. The running is so slow. I have Phase run set to 'Q' on my main. So I still actually press Q thinking I'll phase....lol

But at least I'm tougher than my minion for once in this new build. Go with what you are going to enjoy most. As much as I look back fondly of my CrankyOldWoman experience, I don't want a build so reliant on the minions again. It wasn't until I got Spiritual aid that my spell DPS finally got some real kick. It jumped from 2k to over 6k . Cleary, my zombies were miles ahead of me!

But it'll be good to know you're prepping for the big day. Matt said March 8, so book it in your diary. I am expecting you to do very well! And that would mean not joining body piles in Vaal chambers in the mines. XD

As for the goodies not transferring, no lost. You will have to start as SSF anyway, so I consider it all practice. I am going to try to get myself a little more skilled in crafting. It's also still worth considering Occultist for you too, if you're in the mood for something different but want to do witch. I heard it can be made into a tanky witch, so that is an experiment worth trying. If I wasn't going to do witch, I might try Berserker. I have a fondness for Berserkers in fantasy. ;)

We should do it again when we both have a moment. Run a map together. They seem to follow a format, so it should be easier to stick together. We might even get some of these challenges done together quicker.

oooo good idea; im still at 6 completed challenges too.

The solar guards do shoot; just not constantly like the curtains. The solar guards use various spells. Sometimes it's spells misses because it is a random aoe or by the time it finishes charging its big golden ball to shoot; the mob is already dead. I think they are better because their dps is higher when the spell hits. Whereas the curtains damage per beam is smaller. Will have to experiement and play with the solar guards more. Maybe I might do a combo of one solar guard and one curtain.

Have you notice how hopeless some of the spectres are? They hang back and do NOTHING!

hahahaha yes! They really do just hang at the back. Then later you see them go take a swipe at a mob; only to miss because the mob either moved away or had just died.

But it'll be good to know you're prepping for the big day. Matt said March 8, so book it in your diary.

March 8; any idea starting time? If at night I wouldn't be able to play much. Ive got a birthday party to go to the following morning on the other side of town. So you better work twice as hard for both of us =D

I am going to try to get myself a little more skilled in crafting.

To get more crafting upgrades; if you unveil items you pick up from the syndicates; you can obtain the upgraded or new crafts.

It's also still worth considering Occultist for you too, if you're in the mood for something different but want to do witch. I heard it can be made into a tanky witch, so that is an experiment worth trying. If I wasn't going to do witch, I might try Berserker. I have a fondness for Berserkers in fantasy. ;)

From what I saw; Occultist is more like a warlock? Dot and Run; the damage over time will kill them as you dot other mobs.

Hummmm I wonder why you have a fondness for Berserkers in fantasy....is it the big muscles? Or the big 2 hand axe they carry? Or maybe it is because he is a hairy tank? lol or maybe because he can be a bit of an airy fairy. hehehe

I just threw together another post for you. I'll certainly get around to answering you about my Berseker fantasies! But definitely the big muscles!! ;)

Love your hideout. I haven't really played around with them, beyond finding a few.
I like the one in the Dread Thicket; waterfalls and moss rocks for the win.
I lost my level 40 Gladiator down in the mine. The dark got him. He actually felt really strong; I just got too cocky, I guess. Thought I could quickly sneak into that room to lob a flamethrower trap in; and couldn't find my way out again as the crawler snuck away.
Gotta remember to keep a flare on hand in case. Expensive lesson, I guess.
Going to switch it up a bit, and go pure magic, chaos innoculation; lightning witch.
Normally my magic types are necromancers, so should be a novel experience.
March the 8th is when the league drops. I'll post an announcement in a couple of weeks.

@linnyplant's hideout is at another level. Did you see her previous hideout? I went to visit and it is full on a new place. Makes you wonder why she doesn't embark on a career into interior design. But we do have to keep an eye on her. She has an affinity for cages and locking people in there. Her poor monkey was locked up with no food or water. Then when she freed him; I told him to run for his life. But he just ran into a wall. She broke him mentally too.

You know you've broken them mentally when you can take away the cage and they don't try to escape.

@mattclarke why is there a horse in my PoE post?! It's not even in spectre form!! :P

@supersoju, you play sims, so you should totally get torturing your Characters for fun. Locked your Sim dads in a doorless and windowless house yet? hehehe
Interior decorating PoE style is fun, it's cheaper than real life! ;)

So cruel Linny; so so cruel.
I'm take it that you have more ghost sims than the living ones in your sim world.

Hummm maybe I can just hire you to decorate my hideout; but keep the interactive items/npc close to each other

This will be a fascinating race then. I think you, @supersoju and me are all going to be playing witch. I'm assuming she is as we both have only limited time to prep. It will be fascinating to see how it goes. I'm obviously going with Freezing Pulse Ocultist witch, which is why I am practicing this build. But really not sure about my strategy with the chaos damage going through the Energy Shield, and if I can even craft around that. One things for sure, I need to read up on crafting recipes! So I'll be trying to see how I adapt to that weakness.

Looking forward to the big day. It will be great fun. :)

Witch for the win!!
But I probably won't be able to play for long; so it is all up to you Linny!

I was thinking about you just now. Need to reply to you soon! but sooo tired right now.

It's always hotly contested. There are some real players who get involved, so competition is tight.
I don't enter, myself, as I play on Xbox; not PC.
I enjoy your posts; they're fun to read, but with plenty of well-considered images. Very similar to @enjar's contributions, which are always fantastic.

But I don't think it should matter if it is PC or xbox. I mean, the rules are the same right? You should participate anyway as long as the release dates don't stop you.

Thanks for the encouragement. I've always said, I mostly post to stay in touch with supersoju. It's our comms channel. hehehe But I do enjoy keeping track of the game and to keep myself motivated for the research and your race. So I'm certain a lot of my interest in the game stems from me feeling I need to post updates that the game has not yet defeated me. lol Honestly, I have a lot of love for the game. Really appreciate you having recommended it to me.

Also, the hideout thing. I actually buy a few pieces such as lighting effects and I was a little in love with Sin's portal effect which is also a MTX. So I like to spend on my hideouts while I wait for my favors to get better with the NPCs. I see the hideouts as a therapeutic part of the game. You should give it a go. I think you were referring to the Lush hideout. But you might decide you like some of the others too. I get it that your style of gaming means that you won't get to see all the options. I have a lot of respect for that too.

As for level 40 gladiator, it's impressive you got that high. It sounds like this one hasn't dampened your enthusiasm to try another build, so that is good news. Trying to make a witch tanky will be fun for you.

(FYI: no need to upvote my comments, Matt!)

I'm thinking I'll read up a bit before I do; plan the build (something I've never done before).
Tempest Shield might be fun.

I agree, I don't like following builds, but I plan to research a bit more on the Occultist and freezing spells. Apparently, the Occultist is one a lot of Hardcore players like. I wonder why and want to experience it for myself. I'm pretty much working on Cranky to the part of the skill tree that is about the cold spells. So for DoNotDieLinny, I'm just prioritising that. I only want to do it for the fact that I don't want to be a necromancer again and I really have a thing for freezing pulse. When you're a slow player like me, the only strategy is to slow down the opponent even more! lol

I love smashing frozen mobs; particularly as it means they can't be resurrected.
Bad option for a necromancer build, though. You run out of corpses all the time.

That's why you carry the skill gem, Desecrate. Works like a charm. ;)

But I really haven't had any issues even without desecrate. Freezing is a chance thing, so there is always some that I must be able to resurrect, because I've never had issues with my zombies. Although, I am now planning to drop cold snap and adding in Herald of Ice, which makes those who are killed by freezing pulse explode. So that might change things. But as a necro, I always have to carry my desecrate gem, even if it's not equipped sometimes!

I had Unearth supported by totem in one of my builds a while ago.
Walk into a room, raise a totem, which starts firing all these corpses everywhere.
Use cremation to turn them into volcanoes.
Win.

Therein lies the reason PoE is so fun. There are so many ways to achieve a similar result depending on your motivation. Need some corpse? How do you wish for it to be delivered? lol

It's a really pretty looking game! RoFL DoNotDieLinny, now that's an awesome name XD sounds like you're having fun playing hardcore. Did you end up deciding to follow a build guide or are you merrily doing your own thing? I don't know about you but I know the way I follow tutorials, I would read a build guide and then do my own thing and die horribly XD

It is so gorgeous visually. It makes up 30% of my love of the game. I still haven't read a build guide properly. I find that I just aren't enthused enough to really focus. But I will need to do better before Matts race. I need a clear strategy, so I don't waste too much time umming and ahhing over decisions like I do now. I enjoy both Hardcore and Softcore. They are different games, but both have their purpose for me. :)

Thanks for dropping by ryi! <3

heya cuddles, I should sleep more and play less...Good idea! <3
