Not Now Death, I'm Painting - full image

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Recently I posted a time lapse video to D.Tube of the development of this painting. I have however been holding off posting the full image because I've been waiting for some bits of camera equipment to turn up in the mail.

For a long time now, I've been battling with obtaining good photos of my artwork. To you on the other side of the screen, they might look good. To me here in the studio where I an compare the original to the screen, there's always been something missing in the digital image.

That is, until I was discussing the problem with a friend visiting the studio who commented that the originals looked better. While that definitely is good to hear, (one would hope not to hear it the other way around), it is ultimately frustrating to know that the artwork is being judged across by the internet via the digital image I post.

The friend suggested I invest in a polarisation filter for my camera lens. This is a metal ring with a glass plate that is mounted (screwed) onto the front of the camera lens. The glass filter is much like good quality sun glasses which block (filter out) light from specific directions. The end effect is that I can rotate the filter on the lens until I reduce the amount of glare or reflection on the canvas.

After some experimentation, I discovered the effect was not as dramatic as I expected, as I still had to be mindful of extraneous light sources and objects reflecting light, however, the filter certainly did help.

So here's to more accurate representations of my artwork online.

If you missed it, here's the time lapse video of the painting process.

Polarizing filter - I thought that was common knowledge. I would have to find one to fit my camera, good reminder. I meant to get one for quite some time. In days of old, I used to take photos of artwork on an overcast day outside on the north side of my house. For the ultimate challenge of this filter, go to the Fuchs Villa and try to take one of his large paintings!

Worse still if the artwork is under glass. That's where the polarfilter might help out.

What a fantastic painting!

Thank you Maysi!

That guy behind you is playing only on one string! For the last tune it should be sufficient. You are a master who didn't cut his artistic roots. All the best @leo!

Cheers Johano! Yes, playing on one string, time is running out. I'd better get cracking. =D

What a painting ! Congratulations @leoplaw!

Oh, the internet and technology are always really tripping my mind, Leo. If I see a picture at different monitors, the colours came out different and it's really frustrating sometimes.... thinking that people would look at things through the filter of 'inaccurate' lens

But, I guess that's just how life is.... hahaha

Love this painting, as you know already <3 Gorgeous work <3

Thank you @veryspider. It bugs me sometimes, otherwise worrying about how the artwork renders across so many different devices is a waste of time. The time is better spent on... creating more artwork. =)
