Ecuador's President Says Assange was 'Spying', In Attempt to Justify Terminating Asylum

in #julianassange6 years ago (edited)

A new level of absurdity is being levied at Julian Assange. With the obvious backlash in expelling Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, the President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, is trying to come up with whatever bullshit he can fling in the hopes something sticks. According to him, the decision to terminate Julian Assange's asylum status was because Assange was using the embassy as a "spying center".

"It is unfortunate that, from our territory and with the permission of authorities of the previous government, facilities have been provided within the Ecuadorian embassy in London to interfere in processes of other states."

"We cannot allow our house, the house that opened its door to become a centre for spying. Our decision is not arbitrary but is based on international law."

Well, if you read that carefully, the message is that Assange doing his work to expose the lies, corruption and wrongdoings of other states through the work of WikiLeaks, is doing work that "interfere in processes of other states". Well no shit that's what it does. When you try to expose the dirt your interfering with the one doing the dirty shit.

This is what the corrupt Moreno is trying to twist into a violation of asylum. At least, according to the ad hoc draconian protocols that were imposed on Assange last year. They wanted to create a pretext to justify expelling him, sending him off to the U.S. for a show trial. So they made rules to silence him, such as not being allowed to say anything against other states which Ecuador has a relationship with. i.e. don't say shit about the United States.

Ecuador revoked the standing asylum status, ending his 7 years stay at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, and allowing the British police to arrest him for breaking the terms of his bail in 2012. Assange pleaded not guilty to that charge in court. The maximum sentence for the offense will be a 12 month prison sentence.

But let's not kid ourselves, this is all about getting him extradited to the U.S. If the U.K. doesn't extradite him immediately, they will let him serve his prison sentence, and then extradite him afterwards.

The other legal trouble Assange was in at the time was for sexual assault charges in Sweden. One charge expired in 2015, and the other was dropped by Sweden in 2017, with the alleged victim asking to have the case reopened now that Assange is out.

This means Assange could be sent to Sweden after his U.K. sentencing and prison term, and then finally extradited to the U.S. Some 70 U.K. legislators have urged UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid to give priority to the Swedish rape case before the U.S. request for extradition.

But I think the U.S. deep state is foaming at the mouth and seething with lust for ripping Assange to pieces and locking him up, and won't want to wait long at all.

Jennifer Robinson, a lawyer speaking on behalf of Assange, said Assange would have always cooperated with Swedish authorities in their case, had it not been for the threat of extradition to the U.S. in 2012 that he knew existed then. The problem isn't the U.K. or Swedish justice, but the so-called "American justice" that is feared.

"We are absolutely happy to answer those queries if and when they come up."

"The key issue at the moment is US extradition, which we have warned about for many years. He's not above the law. Julian has never been concerned about facing British justice or indeed Swedish justice. This case is and has always been about his concern about being sent to face American injustice."

In response to the false justifications made by Ecuador in recent days, like the recent one by Moreno about "spying", Robinson called them out on th eir BS as well:

"I think the first thing to say is Ecuador has been making some pretty outrageous allegations over the past few days to justify what was an unlawful and extraordinary act in allowing British police to come inside an embassy."

Along with the poop allegations, I think I recall some assertions that JA's cat was wired up and being used as some kind of robocat spy device. Given that Assange had no means of even connecting to the internet, make phone calls, the mail, or even get visits from attorneys or concerned parties without being surveilled and even having confidential documents taken from his legal team, the utterly ludicrous contention that Assange was in any way able to conduct spying operations while confined to the embassy is clearly false.

In addition to these claims, Ecuador also states that JA rode his skateboard, dirtied his dishes, and didn't bathe regularly. Obviously intolerable dangers to their national security. Or blatant lies, gross exaggerations, and slander. My money is on the latter.

Thanks for keeping this up front and real.

How dare he threaten the national security of Ecuador with his lack of ability to upkeep proper hygiene?! He is amongst the Brits, he needs to be proper doesn’t he know? Send him to Gitmo for such heinous crimes!

Ecuador had it Billions of dollars loan approved prior to Assange's arrest. The US gov.t really is so powerful.

It’s sad what these government clowns think they can say to justify their illegal activities. Assanges lawyer was right, this was a very dark day for journalism in the west.

What, with no evidence, Calling this Moreno a bunch of BS.

Moreno came to power with Correa voters after all.

It might be illegal to revoke asylum for Julian as he is an Ecuadorian citizen now so how can Ecuador revoke asylum for one of its citizens?
