Assange's True Crime? Exposing the US Government, Corporations, Media, Democrats, Clinton, and Israel
The charge being brought on Assange, of conspiring with Chelsea Manning to "commit computer intrusion", is a sad joke. It's all they have left to try to pin on him after the Justice Department concluded in 2013 what Assange couldn't be charged for published the Afghanistan and Iraq war logs. If they did, they would also have to charge the New York Times, Washington Post and other news agencies who published classified material.

The charge is another broad sweep being pinned on WikiLeaks. Glenn Greenwald explained it as "Assange is charged with helping a source preserve anonymity, a common practice by investigative reporters". So again, if they go after Assange for offering to help Manning evade being detected for the leaking of documents, other organizations can be targeted.
Not that they would, as the government is only interesting in going after Assange. The rest of the media tends to bark less and toe the establishment line much more.
The real crime Assange has committed is in exposing the war crimes, torture, malfeasance, corruption and embarrassing facts about various powerful actors in the world. This of course relates to the US governments crimes in wars they started in other nations, like Iraq and Afghanistan, which we know of largely to the Manning leaks. Shortly after, we have the embarrassment of the Clinton and DNC emails which some insiders say fueled the witch hunt for a "Russiagate" to try to punish those who brought about a democratic defeat in the lat election.
Alison Weir of If Americans Knew blog, which deals with the Israeli influence in US politics, and the aggression against and plight of the Palestinians, covered some of the major WikiLeaks revelations that took place in the past 12 years thanks to Assange. Specifically, about Israel and other actors helping them in their efforts against the Palestinians.
Here are the points covered about Israel:
- Israel planned to keep Gaza on “brink of collapse”
- Israel used control over Palestinian money to control Gaza
- Israel colluded with PA and Fatah
- Israel planned violence against Palestinian nonviolence
- Israel’s nuclear monopoly, helping Israel by opposing Assad
- Susan Rice worked to protect Israel at the UN
- Eizenstat worked to influence Hillary on Israel
- Hillary’s campaign team advised that she only talk about Israel at private fundraisers
- Israeli general admits that US and Israeli security interests “often clash”
- Israeli Chief of Staff reveals Israel is preparing for a war against civilians
- Israel misled public about Hamas; Israel opposes a lasting ceasefire
- Israel & US decide to hide delivery of US bunker busting bombs to Israel (for targeting Iran)
- Israeli was concerned about Russia & Turkey
- Efforts “at the highest levels” of the US government to remove restrictions for Israelis concerning dual citizenship
There are a few paragraphs for each in her expose, please go read the page if you want to know more about each item above.
The Israel topics are less covered. The most famous leaks are listed in the Top 10 WikiLeaks publications which you might like to know about (if you don't already). They are listed in an infographic series where you can learn about them in a few minutes.
The top 3 for me being:
Gitmo Files: The Guantanamo files exposed systematic and routine violations of the Geneva Conventions and abuse of nearly 800 prisoners as young as 14 and as old as 89 at Guantanamo Bay.
Source
Iraq War logs: The Iraq War Logs showed the true number of civilian deaths in IRaq as well as abuse and torture of prisoners by police and military in full knowledge of coalition forces.
Source
Collateral Murder: The Collateral Murder classified US military video depicts the 2007 slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad, including two Reuters journalists and their rescuers. It documents a war crime.

Don't forget these are the real "crimes" for which Assange is being targeted by the most powerful government on the planet, ready to send him to prison and end his life if need be. Assange was arrested, at the behest of the US government, by the UK government, which was allowed by Ecuador after the revoked Assnge's asylum. This is unheard of.
Ecuador was waiting on a $4.2 billion loan from the IMF to help with their financial troubles. After the (US-ordered) IMF released the loan, Ecuador erases the asylum and grants the UK police access to arrest Assange but dump him in the UK version of Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo). Journalist Pepe Escobar call this act the "killing of journalism":
"Julian Assange is not a U.S. citizen, he’s an Australian. WikiLeaks is not a U.S.-based media organization. If the US government gets Assange extradited, prosecuted and incarcerated, it will legitimize its right to go after anyone, anyhow, anywhere, anytime."
Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

Trump pursuing Assange has taken a major hit on press freedom in the US. I hope things will turn around!
You are correct, generally that is an end game that will have your story told by historians and not yourself
