Choosing the Right Exercise Routine

in #exercise6 years ago

Since attending college in ‘06 for exercise science and sports management, I’ve taken on positions as a personal fitness trainer at various gyms and health clubs.

For the record, that photo above is not me by any stretch of the imagination. What he’s doing is quite impressive and I may have to work up to that.

But anyways, I’ve designed a magnitude of workout plans throughout the years for my clients. What I noticed often is that I’d design a plan, show my client how to implement it, and then watch as they eventually stop coming back into the gym.

They either stop coming or they go back to their routine from before they met with me which would give them minimal results. I get it, not all plans are going to work for everybody.

The fact is, everyone is different and has different expectations when entering into a workout routine. Choosing the right one is essential to actually sticking with it long-term.

For instance, if you started a new plan at the turn of the new year and you quit already, it’s most likely because you didn’t enjoy it. It was a drag to you and you got bored or you got burned out.

The Right Routine

—-

The right routine is going to look different for every single human being on the planet because it is dependably on your goals, your personality, your proximity to a workout facility (it could even be your home), and your schedule.

Choose a routine that actually works with what you are trying to accomplish physically. For example, if you are trying to lose weight, then a routine that combines cardio and light weight training will yield great results.

If your personality is geared towards having fun, then consider something like BollyX...a Bollywood-inspired dance workout. Perhaps fun for you is running obstacle courses or rock climbing with friends.

Are you an indoor person or an outdoor person? Knowing yourself is important when choosing a routine because you will have a better understanding of what type of environment you enjoy most. I like a combination of indoor and outdoor activity.

Does the workout routine you’re thinking about choosing require you to drive to a gym 3 times per week? It’s important to determine how’ll you’ll be able to fit that into your existing schedule.

Take Action

—-

If you’re still not sure what type of plan to choose, then just pick one and give it a shot. Sometimes you don’t know what style you like best until you sample a few of them.

The key though is once you’ve found what you like and something you can see yourself doing long-term, stick with it and don’t waiver away from it until you hit your fitness goal.

If your routine becomes dull, then it is critical to switch it up so that it doesn’t feel like work. Exercise is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, so choose a plan that gets you excited and pumped up to take action.

Health is more important than many realize. The worst thing you can do is sit around all day eating junk food. Get active, find something you love, and do it until you reach success. Feel free to drop any questions down below and I’ll be happy to reply. -Ken

Health is wealth. Preparing a routine is not hard thing but ...following them require a strong will.

This is so true Ken. I’ve noticed over the years that I’ve been working out, that certain things make working out a lot more enjoyable. One in particular is when I run. I can run inside or outside, but prefer inside. I prefer inside because I usually run longer distances and it’s easier for me to take my mind off of me running. I’d also rather run with someone when I’m outside as well.

I think I am feeling that dullness kick in but don’t really have the time to adjust and seek help so I keep doing what I always do. I have had the goal to try something new like CrossFit but am exhausted by the time I get home. However, I have good will power and always find the time to at least get a 30 minute walk everyday (benefit of having a treadmill).
