Kaya, Malaysia’s favourite toast.
A classic and hearty breakfast loved by many Malaysians.
Presenting Malaysia’s pride and joy; Kaya
A flavour so :-
-rich
-milky
-thick
-sweet
-fragrant
The word kaya literally translate to “rich” in the Malay language. Hence the jam being known for its rich and thick consistency that is loved by many. The key ingredients are santan
(coconut milk) and pandan leaves that creates a creamy yet caramel-like taste.
Growing up as a kid, I never seemed to appreciate it as much as I do now being in my 20’s, probably because it didn’t look very appetizing from its greenish looking goop texture. Many would describe the flavour of kaya as a sweet caramel milky jam that can be enjoyed in any occasion.
It is the country’s favorite jam for sandwiches, however, you can spread it on crackers and puff pastries too which works great as well.
Personally, I find it best eaten with a few knobs of cold butter. The slight saltiness of the butter is so contrasting, it accentuates the sweet flavour of the kaya and cold butter on a freshly toasted bread has a really unique flavour and texture that is similar to eating fried ice cream.
And the best thing is you can find these toast for under RM 3 at every coffee shop.
yummy
