LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON BUYING A USED CAR. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE A MASSIVE HELP :)

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Hi Friends :)

I have spent today going around the used car sales looking for a better car as my little old lady is dying. Her engine light came on last week, it stayed on for a day then went off. Not sure why but she is 14 years old so really can't expect her to last forever.

Thank you Google.

How do you look for a good car when you haven't got a clue about cars, I know the basics, 4 wheels, steering wheel, mirrors, engine. mileage My hubby hasn't got a clue either, so what do I need to look out for, how do I know I am buying a good model or being ripped off.

We have been round all the car sales lots that are near to us, next weekend we are going further afield to check a few more out. I don't know a mechanic who can come with us so we are stuck using our own common sense but when it comes to cars we don't have any.

It would be different if we could win the lottery then I could go buy a brand new one straight off the forecourt. We have 3 - 4 thousand available, really don't want to go over that.

IF THERE ARE ANY MECHANICS ON HERE, COULD YOU PLEASE ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FOR ME AS THESE WILL HELP ME ON MY SEARCH

MY QUESTIONS

BEST MAKES AND MODELS
WHAT IS A GOOD MILEAGE
PRIVATE OR DEALER

PLUS ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY RECEIVED

PLEASE HELP ME

Thank you @son-of-satire

My last two cars I bought privately you seem to get a better price, although I haven’t I believe you can pay the AA or RAC etc to give the car a look over. Cheers mike

Ohh that is interesting, I will look into that. Thank you :)

In my opinion the maker and model just depends on your range for the car and what type of car you are looking for, whether it be fuel economical or a 7 seater for a big family. The mileage issue is solved by hybrid cars that run on like 20km per litre in my country, don't know about yours.

I am not sure about that, I will have to check it out. I know to keep away from Diesel as they are stopping them

Yes diesel cars aren't efficient at all and are better for loading vehicles rather than private cars.

I have an idea what I want, just got to find a good deal :)

We have used CarGurus.com and had good success with it in the past.

Is that for America, as we are in the UK

I'm in the US so I'm not sure about the UK, sorry.

No problem, thank you anyway :)

My uncle was a mechanic and he told me one very good piece of advice about used cars...

If you buy a used car...you buy used problems.

I know :(
Can't afford a new one just yet.

For a young gal a Toyota or Honda is awesome! Cheap parts, run great and easy to maintain. Also.... make sure there are no leaks (fluids) and it has low mileage. Good luck on your purchase!

A young gal, haha I wish. Thank you for the advice.. I do like cheap parts :)

your posts are very helpful and helpful once a friend,
i really enjoy this
Thank you very much,
success always for you

I bought mine privately. Got a better deal and I have good luck with it so far...mine is a KIA.

I do like KIAs. I am hoping to find one soon as mine isnt very well :(

Would you believe my KIA is 20 years old and still running like a top?

And i thought my car was old at 14 lol

Never had a problem with my little Hyundai elentra. She just keeps running no matter what I put her through. Mechanic says it’s an easy car to work on. Bought from a private owner. 🐓🐓
