Market Friday: searching for a very good Chinese restaurant, เดินหาร้านอาหารจีนที่กรุงเทพฯ

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the compassionate @dswigle. I never thought that I would be searching for the location of an old Chinese restaurant in Bangkok as I am not a foodie. This restaurant has opened small branches in a few shopping malls. I have been a regular customer at one of these branches and I am very impressed by the quality of the ingredients, consistency of high standard of all the dishes at reasonable prices.

My first effort of trying to find this old restaurant was not successful as I got lost in the winding alleys. But the second time was a success, as I got more detailed information. The trick is to start at the right beginning.

The search has to start in front of Robinson shopping mall in New Road, Robinson is two minutes’ walk from Skytrain station: Taksin or Sathorn Bridge. Charoen Wiang Road is just opposite the shopping mall. This is a nice long alley full of street food stalls, barber shops, massage and spa service and other restaurants.

This New Road area was one of the oldest parts of Bangkok and this main road was the first road being constructed as a result of the lobby by the diplomatic community during the Reign of King Rama V, over a hundred years ago. Being close to Chao Phraya River, this area was the hub of Chinese immigrants, small trading shops, several markets with several piers for cargo ships. Many of the local people in this area have been living in shop-houses in these small alleys since their grandparents generations. So, I feel at home among these working people as they remind me of my beloved Chinese grandparents. Life was hard for that generation but hard work always paid off nicely.

I just walked slowly giving myself time to absorb the simple life and atmosphere of this community. Time has changed and there are more immigrating workers from the north-east of Thailand, judging by the style of street food in the area. The richer Chinese workers of the past decades have now become prosperous middle class and moved to more up scale accommodation.

เราไม่เคยคิดมาก่อนว่า ตนเองจะบ้าขนาดมาเดินตามหาร้านอาหารจีนตามซอกซอยแบบนี้ เราไม่ค่อยชอบการที่เพื่อนๆไปขับรถตามหาร้านอร่อยกินตามที่ต่างๆ เพราะเราคิดว่านั่นเป็นการตามใจกิเลส และไม่ใช่วิถีของชาวพุทธ เราไม่ชอบเห็นคนกินอาหารด้วย ความตะกละและขาดสติปัญญา พระวัดป่าที่เข้มงวดจะมีการเตือนตนเองในการฉันอาหาร แต่นี่เราก็เป็นเอามาก เหตุผลก็คือ ร้านนี้มีสาขาเล็กๆตามห้างใหญ่บางแห่ง เราได้ลองแล้วก็ประทับใจมาก เพราะเขาใช้ของดีในการทำอาหาร สดและสะอาด การปรุงอาหารก็ไม่ใช้ผงชูรส ร้านอาหารจีนส่วนใหญ่ทำอาหารรสอร่อย เพราะใส่ผงชูรสมากมาย ราคาก็สมเหตุผล เพราะฝีมือการทำอาหารเป็นแบบระดับเชพ เราได้ถามพนักงานที่ร้านและไปเดินหาร้านดั้งเดิม แต่หาไม่พบในครั้งแรก เราก็หาข้อมูลเพิ่ม เพื่อเสาะหาร้านนี้ เราอยากไปคุยกับเจ้าของร้าน อยากรู้ว่าครอบครัวเป็นคนจีนจากมณฑลอะไร มีการถ่ายทอดฝีมือการทำอาหารในครอบครัวสืบต่อกันมากี่ชั่วอายุคน

นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่เราเจออาหารจีนระดับห้าดาว ในร้านแบบข้างถนนในราคาที่ถูกมาก เราโชคดีที่เคยมีประสบการณ์การกินและทดลองอาหารมาหลายระดับ ทำให้รู้ว่าอะไรดีจริงๆ เราก็เลยอยากรู้ว่าเมนูเต็มฉบับของที่ร้านดั้งเดิมเป็นอย่างไร มีความหลากหลายและลูกเล่นขนาดไหน จึงต้องดั้นด้นเสียเวลาไปเดินหลงหลายรอบ อะไรทำให้เจ้าของร้านยืนยัดในการรักษาคุณภาพในราคามี่เหมาะสม ร้านอาหารจีนห้าดาวบางแห่งยังไม่สามารถผัดเส้นก๋วยเตี๋ยวได้แบบนี้ เหมือนร้านอาหารจีนที่มีขื่อเสียงในลอนดอนเลย นี่เราจะมีที่กินอาหารดีๆแบบสมัยก่อนในกรุงเทพในราคาคนไทยแล้ว ดีใจจริง เราต้องหาให้เจอ เราก็เริ่มต้นจากการไปหน้าห้างโรบินสัน แล้วข้ามถนนไปฝั่งตรงข้าม เดินหาซอยชื่อ ถนนเจริญเวียงให้เจอ แล้วเดินเล่นดูข้างทางไปเรื่อยๆ ทิวทัศน์น่าสนใจและสะท้อนความเป็นอยู่ของคนย่านนี้ มีร้านอาหารอีสานหลายร้าน เพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการของคนทำงานในย่านบางรักและสีลม เราชอบร้านทำผมที่ตกแต่งร้านอย่างสดใส ร้านส้มตำบางร้านเผาพริกและย่างปลาทูเรียกลูกค้า เดินตรงไปเรื่อย เราผ่านร้านอาหารสิบกว่าร้าน จนถึงหัวมุมถนนที่แต่งสวนอย่างสวยงาม เพราะเป็นโรงแรมนั่นเอง

I just walk straight, sightseeing along the way till I see this nice little garden at the corner of a hotel. This is the only hotel in this alley which is opposite the Chinese restaurant.

The restaurant looks very ordinary and humble from the outside. The dining area is upstairs with the main kitchen on the ground floor. The staff is very nice so I could take photos of the menu whose contents are very impressive. There are lots of dishes which I never tasted before.

ร้านแสนยอดอยู่ตรงข้ามโรงแรม The Grand Sathorn Hotel มีหน้าร้านเป็นตึกแถวสามชั้นโดยมีครัวอยู่ชั้นล่าง ห้องอาหารอยู่ชั้นบน เราก็เดินเข้าไปสอบถามและขอดูเมนูเพื่อถ่ายรูป เราคิดว่าจะต้องหาเวลาและอดอาหารก่อนไปนั่งกินอาหารจีนที่นี่ เมนูของเขามีความหลากหลายอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อสำหรับร้านเล็กๆอย่างนี้ ร้านนี้มีอายุ 57ปี และเขาก็มีชื่อเสียงพอตัว

Another reason for locating this Chinese restaurant is that it is very difficult to find restaurants which do not put MSG in their food! But this old restaurant has the practice of not using MSG. In addition, I could request the chef not to add any sugar in my food; I often ask for extra vegetables in exchange for having less noodles. They are very kind and accommodating too.

So, this is my favourite Chinese restaurant in Bangkok. You should try their special sauce with Hennessy XO in their duck noodles!! My friend always orders this dish! I think I have to start doing solid walking exercises one week before visiting this restaurant.
