The story is great! I love how her mother's fear is a source of power for her. That is going to come in very handy, others' fear strengthens her. Do any intense feelings do this for her? Do the others feel less, so that was her mother benefitted by this? .

He is a ball of fluff with hidden razors! I tickle his belly all the time and then immediately regret it, haha.
The magic in the world is mostly the same for everyone - barring slightly different abilities based on which Gods happen to be in their bloodline. Alexandria has something else in her bloodline, something that the world hasn't seen in millennia. (and is the basis of Lyria's story, Book 2, which watches as this past event unfolds so Alexandria can understand herself better)
For example, there are the Three gods - Joh, Xandur, and Esra'elle - Joh is the God of Divination, whose blood brings about a type of holy fire amongst those born with it, Xandur the God of Empathy and Compassion's blood allows healing and telepathy, and Esra'elle the Creator is the God who happened to create everything, and his blood is to blame for Necromancy.
Alexandria's blood is of a Demon's instead of a God's. 😱 And is marked by her red hair. (In the story's instance, a Demon is basically a creature created by Esra'elle who should still be in the heavens but has found itself trapped in the mortal realm, not an evil thing from the depths of Hell. But backstory marks the red hair as cursed.)
She should've been killed at birth, but wasn't. Her mother has slowly been driven insane over the years. And when she's finally discovered (after this snippet's scene) the Magister's don't know what to do, except the High Magister... whose family line has a history of worshipping Demons.
