The Moon | About formation and composition

in #science9 years ago (edited)

The Conclusions of three studies published in the latest number of the journal Nature claim that the Moon would have formed following a catastrophic collision between Earth and a planet with Mars dimension and a chemical composition similar to Earth's.

This conclusion elucidates the mystery of similar chemical composition of selenic rocks as compared to terrestrial ones.

One of the studies was based on a computerized model of the birth of our solar system by researchers in Israel and France.

In the period immediately following the formation of the planet, 4.5 billion years ago, proto-earth has been through violent clashes with other protoplanets. According to the most widespread theory, the last such cataclysmic collision occurred with a planetoid with a mass approximately 10 times smaller than the Earth and the remains of this collision, remaining in the Earth's orbit, formed the Moon.

The problem with this theory is that the Moon should have been composed mostly (about 60%) of matter from planetoid struck by the Earth, and according to our knowledge, this protoplanet would have had a composition Different from Earth. "So if the protoplanet with which the Earth collided had a different composition from our planet, the Moon would have had such a different composition," said Dr. Hagai Perets, one of the authors of this study for Nature.

But things are not that way. The Earth and the Moon "are almost identical" from the point of view of the chemistry of the rocks that compose them. "This is the main problem for the beautiful hypothesis of gigantic impact," explains Dr. Perets of the Technion-Israel Technological Institute.

In the other two studies, one American and one German, scientists searched for traces of tungsten in samples of selenar rocks borrowed from NASA and identified a small difference from terrestrial rocks, meaning that the ratio of the different isotopes of this Metal has been altered.
