The Last of Us Playthrough [part 2]

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Part 2 of our Last of Us playthrough picks up immediately where we left off. You’ve escaped the Quarantine Zone with Ellie in tow. She’s infected but the virus isn’t spreading. Overlooking a massive chasm in the middle of downtown Boston you can see your target, the capitol building. When Marlene hired you to smuggle Ellie out of the city she told you there’d be a group of Firefly’s waiting for you there. The trek to the capitol building isn’t going to be easy. The bombing campaign the authorities took around the Quarantine Zone was extensive and the city lay in ruins. The buildings in the area have been toppled or are badly damaged and structurally compromised. Huge craters like this opened up exposing the city’s grimy underbelly of subway terminals and sewer lines.

My How the Mighty Have Fallen

The only way around the massive chasm is up and around. You decide to cut through one of the last high rises left standing. The building is severely damaged and has nearly toppled over. If not for resting supported by a neighboring tower it would have completely collapsed. As you enter the building you spot a couple of dead soldiers. They haven’t been dead long so you know there are infected nearby. Moving a little further you find the corpse of a ‘clicker’, someone who’s been infected for a long time and whose body has been completely transformed by the virus. The fungal spores have grown so profusely they barely look human at all. Completely blind the clickers navigate the world through echo location. The unsettling clicking sounds they make are a harbinger of danger ahead.

The building creaks and trembles under your feet. It feels as if it could slide off its resting perch at any moment and crash to the streets below. You want to get through the building as fast as possible but you have to take it slow. A den of infected and clickers rests in your way. You attempt to sneak by but one of the frenzied infected know as runners sees you and lets out a terrifying shriek. The rest of the infected are alerted to your presence and prepared or not, you’re in for a bloody life or death struggle. Luckily the infected are mindless, otherwise the odds would have likely been overwhelming. When the coast is clear you signal to Ellie and Tess and you continue on.

Set Forth into the Pit of Darkness

You make your way down into the subbasement where the damaged foundation and blast area outside combined to open a path into the nearby subway terminal. But you know as well as any that the subways are infested with the infected. This station in particular is overrun by clickers. Extremely dangerous, they are much easier to circumnavigate as long as you remain extremely quiet. Stealthily you traverse the terminal taking down any unsuspecting infected you come across. You need to ensure the path is clear for Tess and Ellie. It’d be a shame to have come this far only to lose your cargo now. As you emerge from the other side of the terminal you’re trapped in an alleyway just shy of your objective. A horde of infected spot you but you are able to duck into an old museum before they swarm you.

Inside the museum things go from bad to worse. A battered ceiling collapses in between you and the girls. As the debris settles you hear clickers on the other side and Tess yelling at Ellie to run. Frantically you search for away to reach them but the clickers are everywhere. One by one you take them down until you reach the upper floor. Tess has barricaded herself in a room and a runner is thrashing at the door. You draw your weapon and put him down. Ellie yells out for help. In the adjoining room Ellie fights off some runners. You and Tess come to her rescue and clear them out. You ask Ellie if she’s ok and she asks, what’s ok? Gruffly you reply, are you still breathing? And Ellie quips back, do small panicked breaths count? A faint smile breaks your solemn face.

The Dawn of a New Day

As you emerge from the building a beautiful sunrise and picturesque view great you. Daylight has broken through the darkness of the night. Ellie looks out with delight and you ask her in your sombre way, is it everything you had hoped for? She replies, the jury’s still out but you can’t deny that view. For the second time in as many minutes a smile cracks across your face. Tess catches it this time and spots you staring at the watch your daughter gave you. The last gift she gave you before she was killed. Tess snaps at you and tells you to stay focused. With that, the smile drains from your face and its back to the business at hand. It’s a straight shot to the capitol building. Just a couple of blocks down a flooded street and you’ll be able to offload this nuisance kid.

Upon entering the capitol building you find the Firefly’s but they are all dead. A squad of soldiers arrives outside and seem to be looking for you. You prepare to run when Tess tells you she’s staying behind to slow them down. You argue fiercely with her but then she shows you. She was bitten in the museum. The infection has already taken hold and she won’t let herself turn. You beg her not to do this but her mind is set. Before she dies she wants to do one good thing. She wants Ellie to make it. She wants humanity to have a chance. You don’t know if your soul can handle losing another loved one. This time it might be too much to bear. She says you have to get Ellie to the Firefly’s. You have to see it through to the end. She makes you promise her.

A Solemn Burden to Carry

There’s not enough time to argue so you grab Ellie and you run. You can hear a firefight behind you and then everything goes silent. You know it’s over, you know Tess is gone. There’s no time for mourning, the soldiers are still coming. You escape the capitol building and flee back into the subway. This terminal is filled with spores. You don your gas mask and turn to Ellie. She doesn’t have one. You ask her how she can be breathing it in and still be ok. She looks at you and earnestly tells you she wasn’t lying. She’s immune. You use the thick cloud of spores to your advantage as you take down an unsuspecting patrol and escape from the other side of the subway line.

Ellie asks you about Tess and tries to apologize. You snap at her. You tell her to never talk about Tess again. In your eyes it’s her fault she’s dead. If you had never taken this job Tess would still be alive. And more importantly you’d be together. Now not only does Ellie bring back the painful memories of your daughter. No, now she also reminds you of the stinging loss of yet another love. But you made Tess a promise and you mean to see it through. You tell Ellie there’s a town nearby. An old friend lives there and he owes you a favor. He might have a car and you’ll need one to meet up with your brother Tommy. He used to run with the Firefly’s and you suspect he may know where to find them.

Welcome to Bill’s Town

You end up on the outskirts of the town of Lincoln. As you leave the highway to take a shortcut Ellie’s face is beaming. She tells you she’s never walked in the wood before. It’s hard for you to imagine someone living their whole life inside the Quarantine Zone never having experienced life before the epidemic. No matter how cold you are towards her it’s hard not to feel the warmth of her innocence. As you approach Lincoln you can see your friend Bill has been busy fortifying it. Booby traps are set up everywhere and there are barricades and fences cordoning off sections of the town. As you navigate the town and scavenge what you can Ellie finds an old arcade machine. She tells you about it and you tell her you never did like video games.

As you enter a back alley you hear a clicker approaching. You prepare yourself for a fight but as it rounds the corner an explosion rocks the area, vaporizing the clicker. You tell Ellie that was one of Bill’s traps. She asks you if he’s paranoid much. And you tell her she doesn’t even know the half of it. Further down the alley a barricade blocks your path and you cut through an old mechanics shop. As you open the door a snare tightens around your ankle and you are hoisted high into the air. You can hear a mass of infected approaching. Panicked you tell Ellie to cut the rope but the infected are bearing down on you. Is this it? Have you reached the end of the line? Has your luck finally run out? You’re life literally hangs in the balance. What will you do?
