When we were talking about how people like to talk
but they don't listen very well,
I could see that communication is when
there is speaking "and hearing". Not just speaking.
If I am listening when you speak I will think of something
in connection with what you are saying. I will share that with you
and you will then think of something in connection with what I just said.
And in this way a line of communication is open.
It's almost magical or mystical how that happens.
Many people do not know how to do it very well.
Perhaps they are fearful and by adopting a defensive mood
the channel of back and forth is blocked.
Some people speak only to argue. To prove that they are right.
Others speak and don't care who's right
just who speaks the loudest and most forcefully.
Like a contest they need to win.
Another consideration is the content being spoken.
Sometimes it takes a lot of work
to try to find anything of value in it.
And it is not worth it to keep a line of communication going.
The art and science of communication appears to be lost to a great extent.
Perhaps that is why telephone calls have fallen out of grace
with many people who prefer texts or voice messages.
Giving themselves a safe distance from being exposed to speakers who do not listen.
Meaningful communication is a great art and science.
It's not easy to have a good, meaningful chat. I doubt it ever was.

For sure it is difficult to communicate, face someone. How we sit, stand, our face exptession all counts if we talk and listen. While we try to focus on the words, to hear let sink what is said we wonder why the body language says the opposite, about the spot on a shirt, a tattoo, angry look, we feel our stomach turn and our expressions says the speaker all about is...
Is there a right way to commumicate? Is there room to do so? Can we give full attention, do we dare to speak out? Trust and confidence, a safe environment are needed to do so. It's easier to write although the written word is often misunderstood and kept as proof.
