Captured By The Indians: A True Story Of Courage And Perseverance
Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
As many of you know, I'm a big fan of history, especially about the American Wild West and the "settling" of the frontier.
I have to put the word settling in quotes because of course it was already occupied by indigenous peoples and SETTLED well enough in their eyes.
This country had been occupied by Indians for thousands of years and suddenly the white man shows up and thinks he discovered a new land! lol.
I apologize, I'm already off track. What I was saying is that I like to tell stories about the Old West and I have a good one that I'm starting today.
The practice of kidnapping enemies
Many whites were kidnapped by the Indians in the 1800's but not many told their stories after they came back to their own race, if they chose to do so. Many chose to stay with their tribes whom they became members of.
The tribes took prisoners for different reasons, and it wasn't just whites. Sometimes it was to replenish their numbers.
Normally when that happened a young person, male or female, would be taken and held as a slave but would eventually be able to work their way into full tribe membership.
This is the type of story I have for you in this series. It's about a young boy named Herman Lehmann, his story was narrated to a friend in 1927 when Hermann was an old man and his friend wrote it down word for word.
Hermann was 11 years old when he was captured by an Apache raiding party from his family's farm near Fredericksburg, Texas in the year 1870.
The Apache generally wore large head bands and some wore hats:
Willie and Hermann are taken captive
One day in May Hermann and his little brother Willie, age 8, were sent out into the wheat field with their sister Caroline who was about 9 years old and little Gusta who was 2 years old. They were sent out by their mother to scare away the birds.
They got out into the wheat field and sat down to play when suddenly they were surrounded by a terrifying sight.
Hermann didn't give details about the paint but this was a fairly common design:
A group of Indians with painted faces! Caroline jumped up and ran for the house and the Indians fired a couple of shots and she fell to the ground motionless. They all thought she was dead, including the Indians. He found out later that she had just fainted, probably lucky for her.
They grabbed Willie before he could get away but Herman dashed away. Unfortunately the chief, Carnoviste, caught him.
Hermann put up the fight of his life
Has anyone ever caught a wild cat? If you have then you can visualize what happened next. Hermann fought like a wild animal..scratching, biting, punching, kicking, squirming, twisting. He was about to get away when another brave showed up and knocked him down.
They grabbed him while he was faced down, one holding his legs and the other holding his arms and swung him back and forth so his chest and face were hitting the rock and gravel that were in that spot and flung him into the air.
This was truly miserable
When he landed he was half conscious and his hands and feet were bond and all his clothes had been stripped off of him, and his hat of course. They threw him onto the back of a horse face down and he could see that little Willie was in the same situation.
The Indians wasted no time in getting out of there. So there they were. Hermann had been beaten, choked, slapped, and knocked unconscious.
Now he was face down, bound with leather cords, buck naked with the sun blistering his skin and the mesquite thorns and catclaws tearing at them as they rode on for hours.
We'll continue Hermann's painful but exciting story in the next post.
Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all.
PS- ya know...you might just be a redneck if:
The last photos of your momma were taken from the front and the side! lol.
How horrifying for those poor kids. This is off to a sad beginning so you better add some humor...I am begging you!
haha! this isn't one of those humor type stories Butterfly! lol. I haven't found any so far.
If I tried to be funny in this story people would think I was heartless.
It was brutal. there is good news in the next post though. I don't think it's that sad yet though, nobody has died even. The sad part is that the mother thinks she lost her two sons, well, and the father too. That had to be torturous but she gets good news soon so that's mostly assuaged.
I don't think you were around when I did a pole of my readers asking what they'd like me to tell a story about next and gave several choices including being captured by the Indians. So guess which one everyone wanted to hear about? This one. ALL requests, and I got alot of them, were for this story.
No, I wasn't around when you did the pole but I am glad that you are doing this story. I will just have to try not to cringe. : )
howdy today Butterfly! Well I'm flattered that you're reading it and I wouldn't be telling it if it didn't eventually have a good ending because I hate stories that don't have good endings. lol. too depressing and we have enough depressing things going on. emotionally some of it is hard to take though. so good to hear from you! I assume that things are much better since all that snow stopped?
Howdy @janton! I am relieved to hear that this story will eventually have a good ending. I love happy endings too.: ) Yes, things are much better now that the snow stopped. I am really looking forward to tomorrow (Saturday) because it is supposed to be in the 60's. YAY!!! Hope you are doing well. : )
Howdy Butterfly! yes I'm doing great thank you. Although it's supposed to be unseasonably cool here the next few days with temps in the 50's!!! oh no! lol. It's been so nice here, really enjoying it so far because it hasn't gotten hot yet.
When will you go into the parks or wherever and start getting pictures of insects and butterflys and such?
Howdy @jantin! From 80's to 50's? That is quite a drop.
I will be looking for insects and butterflies as soon as it gets warm here. It is still below freezing at night and very cold and windy during the day.
dang where do you live anyway, the North Pole??? jeez. don't tell me, I know I'm not supposed to know. lol.
that's shocking though!

This story keeps remidning me of buster scruggs . Did you watch it yet ?
what? this story is like Buster Scruggs? no way.
No I haven't but thanks for reminding me sir blanchy!
Oh I am glad you are finally telling this story! I remember you mentioning it in a long ago post (well maybe not long ago, but before Butch and Sundance!) and I have been wondering when you would tell this one!
oh I'm glad you want to read about this one Melinda. Nearly zero feedback so I was thinking maybe this wasn't a good choice. lol. But I think it's facinating. That does seem like a long time ago, before the Butch and Sundance series!
It's only getting little feedback because it's the weekend. You'll get a bunch of comments tomorrow.
You think so? I guess I never paid that much attention to the weekend traffic. It all blends together.
My Sunday posts get very few comments until Monday morning.
oh good, thanks. I mean, not necessarily good but thanks! lol.

Good afternoon janton, what a terrible experience for children. Thanks for the first chapter, I look forward to the next .... and I hope there is a happy ending, lol.
Howdy angiemitchell! yes it was quite the harrowing experience but because both sides saw the other as deadly enemies they did some cruel things to each other, both sides got deadly.
Hi janton, oh so right you are! Always two sides to a story and each side has its views of right and wrong. Happens all the time, lol.
PS: Poor lHermann is going on an adventure and a half.😐
haha! yes it's a remarkable story and I have no reason to believe that it isn't 100% true!
The poor mother of those kids. So they just let the two year old be?
In a way maybe knowing his brother was with him was a comfort.
yeah that had to be torture for the mother, they left the 2 year old there, I guess they had too long of a trip back to their home emcampment and had no squaws to take care of the little one. I agree about the brother but...shoot I don't want to say anything else! lol. don't worry it's not tragic news.
That is just brutal to fire at the girl running away. I am definitely not on the natives side this time.
haha! well, if it helps any the Texas Rangers were killing any groups of Indians they could find. Men, women and children.
Both sides saw it as war with an evil, deadly enemy. I guess I should explain that in the next post so people don't get all outraged at just the Indians. At least the Indians took captives and they had a chance to live, the whites just killed them all!
A repulsive time, for sure.
well, in some ways yes. But skirmishes with Indians was rare. Getting kidnapped was even more rare. It was mostly a time of incredible growth and expansion and establishing towns and counties and such. Most settlers never saw Indians and when they did it was to trade goods with them and there were no problems. I guess I better explain that too! lol.
I'm really helping you build your next article ;)
I imagine it like that - like how life is in the every day now, compared to what is discussed on the news. Life for most people is not that eventful.
yes thank goodness for most of us it isn't anything to write about on normal days. Well, you are the exception to that rule because you make everyday occurrences an adventure in life!
A page of the history of early America. Interesting. Poor children. How traumatic it must have been for them.
howdy sir Vincent! that's true but at least the Indians didn't kill them like the Texas Rangers were doing when they found Indians.. men, women and children.(not in all cases but many times) It made the kids tough that's for sure!
Hi Cowboy! Looking forward to reading more about Herman’s life with the Indians.
Howdy redheadpei! Thank you for reading, I think it's a fascinating story and one that few people have heard about so maybe we can learn a little bit about their culture along the way.
Yay! History guy is back!
haha! howdy blacklux! lol...thank you for reading and I think we might be able to learn something along the way of telling this story, just my guess!
serious lack of mustaches so far though! lol.
