Another Amazing Wire Sculptor

in #art4 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

As most of my friends know, I've been finding wire sculptors for months now and I found a new one to share with you today.

This guy is from England like so many of the artists I feature and he's created a way to make incredible life-sized sculptures from chicken wire. His name is Derek Kinzett.

He specializes in humans and fairies. I don't know how big fairies are supposed to be but his are human-sized like this one. Well, there's two of them here but the big one is human-sized:

Each piece takes at least 100 hours to create. He's developed a method by which he carves a sculpture out of foam and then wraps it with 3 of 4 layers of chicken wire and then removes the foam, I assume by melting it.

This makes them see-through to some degree and makes people do a double take, especially in certain light conditions or at night!

Each piece sells for about $7,700 or 6,000 pounds. He gets commissioned to put them up all over the world.

He sprays the sculptures with zinc to keep them from rusting and then applies an acrylic aluminium spray so the color is the original wire color.

Derek's hands are covered with callouses because he doesn't wear gloves. He says gloves impair his sense of touch and impact on the quality of the sculpture.

Callouses or no, I have no idea how he does this work without gloves. I'd be wearing Kevlar gloves!

I'd like to know how this one stands up in that position:

I think the guy is flat-out amazing and he's only 45 yrs old so he's got lots of years ahead of him to create even more fascinating art. You can see his completes works here: derekkinzettwiresculpture.co.uk

PS- Speaking of sculptures, I just found out about this one. It's located in New Jersey across the bay from the World Trade Center. It's called The Tear Of Grief.

I was surprised to learn that this is a memorial from Russia to honor the fallen of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. I didn't know they had done this and I thought it was a nice gesture but many people hate it.

In fact, it was first given to Jersey City and they rejected it but it was accepted by the city of Bayonne.

Foreign Policy magazine listed it as one of the world's ugliest statues, The New Yorker magazine said it looked like a giant tea biscuit...lol..

And Jersey City called it "an insensitive, self-aggrandizing piece of pompousness by one of the world's blatant self-promoters".source I didn't think it was that bad so I guess I have no taste!

The Russian sculptor who created it spent $12 million of his own money on it. I wonder how he felt about the reception it got?

Whoa ok that does seem like a Hella lot of effort bud.. But it sure is stunning though... I don't believe I've ever seen something even remotely connected to such sculptures

Also the tear of grief looks like something to behold

Howdy technicalside! I'm really impressed by this artist too, I'm glad you like his work and thanks for commenting!

Crazy world of beauty and prejudices!

Howdy sir kaminchan! I agree and thanks so much for commenting!

Howdy sir outlinez!Good to meet you and thank you for the deranged coin! I'm glad you appreciate the artwork.

That dude sure has talent. No doubt. Tons of time and patience too. Humans can create such wondrous things when left alone to do so.

Howdy squirrelbait! I agree, I think he's so skilled or gifted or both! And I also thought that tear was very impressive, somehow it's coated with nickel so it couldn't have been an easy task!

The sculptures are amazing and wonderful.
The tear of grief was obviously meant as an expression of sympathy, It’s too bad it got such a adverse reception.

Howdy redheadpei! I agree, I love those sculptures and I think the tear of grief is very impressive also and I'm pretty disappointed that it was received so poorly. I think we should be thankful for such an awesome, thoughtful and expensive gift.

Those who made this ...I just salute this guy and also thanks you for represent.

Howdy shuvo35! Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you appreciate the artwork!

Absolutely incredible! I like the photo showing Derek working on one and thanks for adding the info about the time it takes for him to make one, and how much they cost. Inquiring minds like mine wanted to know. LOL!
Please know that I upvoted this and others before payout. I was busy for the whole Thanksgiving weekend with family, then I didn't feel well for a couple of days, and then Pachino got sick again. Had to take him back to the vet yesterday but this time it wasn't critical. Thank God! Now, if I didn;t take him to be treated, that would have been a different story. Poor thing. : (

Oh don't feel bad, I miss lots of stuff I'm trying to keep up with. I'm so glad Pachino is okay now. Can't keep a good cat down I always say. Well actually I think that's the first time I've said that but it sounded good.

Yeah, you can learn how to make those wire sculptures and make a lot of money by selling them online! I'd wear gloves though. lol.

Hey janton, I am not sure where you get these amazing artists to share with us but his guy is very clever. Maybe, the life size fairies is a true replica of real life sized fairies walking in our midst janton. Think about it, there are human angels so there has to be human fairies, hahah.

Howdy angiemitchell! That's a great point and it may be true. I just always thought of fairies as being tiny but maybe that's because of what I saw on tv or movies.

Hahaha, one never knows janton. It is so amazing to actually look through these sculptors.

I agree on both points, I like the look of those and it would really be eery at night!

We are SO proud to have you as a member of our

Wow steemitbloggers thank you so much, you're the best!

Howdy Jonboy. Amazing wire sculptures.

Not a good idea to politicize art. Art should be just appreciated for what it is. I think the tear sculpture would have been better received if it were shown for what it is - a piece of art.

Howdy sir Vincent! I agree, I don't know why they politicized the artwork. I feel bad for the artist!
