Does anyone remember the old reel mowers?

Our Gasoline Mower is in the shop? What's the backup plan?

Sometimes you just have to go low-tech to get a project done. It was tricky to film, but I got the ol' cell phone camera out to record a first-person perspective of the reel mower in action. Watch as I push... and I mean push, this mower across my front yard.

The wheels cause blades to turn, chopping the grass as I move. It does well with the regular grass, but I notice that weeds and grass that's gone to seed do not get chopped.

This one-man-power engine managed to cut about half the lawn, until my neighbor had sympathy on me and offered his "real" lawn mower. One that uses gasoline.

Next time, it's reel mower all the way!

I have never used one before but my neighbor has one and only uses it to mow his grass. I asked him about it once and he said he just doesn't like messing with a gas powered one...the noise, oil, gas, longevity, etc...

Yes, that's why I got a reel mower. I find it's important to keep the blades sharp. @ironshield

I remember having to use one of these to cut our lawn when I was a kid. Great exercise and I thought when the blades were kept sharp, a nice cut.

When it was new and the blades were sharp, it was really easy to use. It's time for a sharpening, since it was near impossible to finish the lawn today. I was out of breath doing just one pass! Great exercise for sure.
@ironshield

I used one when I was a kid back when, heck of a workout but like everyone said, the grass has to be short and it's alot of work sharpening those blades but it's a good idea to have one for a backup in case we have a collapse of society and no gas. then everyone would be borrowing it!

I remember those, along with rotary phones, air-conditioning wasn't standard and when the one premium channel on cable was HBO.

Good stuff...

Reel mower all the way here! Of course my front and back yard are about the size of a postage stamp 🤣

LOL. If we are ever in an unfortunate situation of not having any gasoline, we will have one of the only mowed lawns in the neighborhood. @ironshield

I’ve used one of those before! I’m not sure why they make them so narrow? Maybe to get in tighter spots? Does yours get low to the ground? Becsuse at the height they cut at, you could almost cut every other day!

I think they are narrow because the larger the reel, the more difficult it is to push. This mower hasn't been sharpened in years and it's finally gotten to the point where it's very difficult to push through taller grass. The mower is pretty low, I should have raised it, given the height of the grass! @ironshield

I've used a few of them in my life
The first one I used was my granpa's. I was about 7, in 1958...the mower was (a lot) older than I was. It worked pretty good on blue grass...not so good on bermuda. Not good at ALL on tall weeds or on anything else much over a few inches high.

Time went by...Dad had one...same thing.

I was deployed overseas....bought one at the BX...same thing.

Pretty good exercise...no noxious fumes...no noise.

I actually like that about the reel mower - no loud noise, no exhaust in the face. A lot more effort to move it, but that only makes us stronger! @ironshield

Reel Mowers provide a better quality of cut than the other style. "green maintainence" for golf courses use them.
Not the one like you have...a special breed $$$$

for short bluegrass on a small yard...it's really not that much exertion.
