What do the terms sets and repetiton mean?
Bodybuilders and weight lifters use terms such as sets and reps. This is to ensure they are keeping track of how many times an exercise is done within a workout. Below i will outline what a set and rep is and explain how to use them within your workout.
what is a set?
Set - This is a group of consecutive repetitions. An example would be "5 sets of x amount of reps". You would do x amount of reps, 5 times for a workout.
what is a repetition?
Repetition - This is one complete motion of an exercise. An example would be "x sets of 10 reps". You would do the same motion 10 times and then rest. Then repeat it again 10 times and rest. Keep doing it until you have reached the number of sets you need to do.
An example of using these terms would be 10 sets of 5 reps. What this means is that 5 repetition is done and then rested for 1 minute and then the 5 repetition is repeated 10 more times after resting for 1 minute after each set.
Sets and reps are used in different ranges depending on what a persons goal is. If someone wanted to get as strong as possible, they would stick to lower reps using heavier weights. For example; 5 sets of 5 reps. If someone wanted to get toned or get ripped, they would stick to higher reps using lower weights (12 reps of 4 sets).
In order to get the best results, one must stick to the same sets and reps for a while until their body adapts to the stress which therefore would mean that they must change around the sets and reps so that the body has something different to tackle. This doesnt mean doing 1000 reps for countless sets, what this would do is stress the muscles too much resulting in over training and getting injured. Every person is different and has different goals, therefore the sets and reps will not be the same for everyone. You must ensure that you choose the right ones for the goals you have.
In my future posts i will talk about how to perform different exercises for best results and the do's and dont's of certain exercises.
Thank you for reading my very first blog(i have never blogged before, so this is something new for me). I hope you all enjoyed it and has helped you understand what sets and reps are.
