Today we will start with the most popular poker game played:
Texas Holdem.
There are other types of poker that we will discuss much later.
Texas Hold'em is the most popular poker variant. Almost all big tournaments are played in this form. The rules of the game are simple and easy to learn, but improving the game can take years.
Texas Hold'em is played using a normal 52-card package, with a hand holding no more than 10 players. Before the cards are dealt, the player who is a virtual dealer in the current hand must be decided. This does not mean that the player in question will divide the cards himself (the book is automatically distributed online and by a dealer authorized in a casino).
The dealer is identified by a small sign called 'button'. The dealer's position determines the players who have to pay the 'blinds'. In order to always have money to win in each pot, two players will make two pre-flop bets before seeing their own cards, bets called blinds.
The first player to the left of the dealer will pay the small blind and the player to the left of the dealer will pay the big blind, which is usually twice the size of the small blind. The button position, and in this way the dealer, changes clockwise after each hand.
Thus, all players will be a virtual dealer, a small blind and a big blind.
Once the blinds have been paid, all players will receive two cards face down. These are called own books and are used by the player in question only.
Then a maximum of five community cards is placed at the centre of the table, cards that can be used by any of the players. The goal is to complete a five-card poker hand out of the seven available.
Possible hands
Royal flush
The strongest possible hand in Texas Holdem is a straight line of the same colour:
ten, valet, queen, king and As
Straight Flush
A smaller straight, of the same colour like 7,8,9,10,12 some colour.
Quads
Four cards of the same rank.
Full house
Three cards of the same rank, together with two other cards of another rank.
Colour
Five cards of the same colour - no matter the order.
Straight
A combination of five consecutive cards.
Three of a kind - Trips
The three cards are of the same rank.
Two pairs
Two single-card cards with two other cards.
A pair
Two cards of the same rank.
High Card
When the players do not have any of the above, the highest hand wins.
The four betting rounds:
Preflop - the first round of betting
All actions that take place before the first three community cards are placed at the centre of the table (flop) are part of the preflop round. Each player looks at his own cards and decides what he wants to do.
The player on the left of the big blind acts first, this position is called 'under the gun' (UTG). That's because, from the point of view of his position, he is the most disadvantaged preflop player.
Each player has the following options:
Fold: This means that the player does not want to play his hand and folds the cards. In this way, he renounces any right on the money collected in the pot.
Call: This means that the player wants to play the hand by paying an amount equal to the current bet amount. It should be noted that postflop can also have the option to check if there is no bet made so far.
Raised: This means that the player will raise the current bet amount. If, however, there is no current bet, you can do one by choosing the bet option.
The second betting round
After the first betting round is over, the first three community cards are placed at the centre of the table. This is collectively called a flop.
Turn - Third round of betting
After all, bets have been made and paid in the second round of betting, the fourth community card is placed at the centre of the table, a token called a turn. Another betting relative happens, starting with the first player to the left of the dealer.
River -** Fourth betting round**
After all, bets have been made and paid in the third betting round, a fifth card is placed at the centre of the table. This is the last community card and is called the river. A last round of betting takes place, starting with the player on the dealer's left.
Showdown
After the last betting round has ended, each player will form the best possible five-card poker hand using combinations of their two own cards and five community cards. At this point, all players have to show their hands to determine the winner of the hand. The player with the best hand at this stage of the game, called showdown, wins the pot.
If two or more players have identical winning hands, the pot is split evenly (split pot). After the hand has finished, the button is moved to a left position and a new hand can start.
In the next article I would like to talk about the types of players we meet at the table. With love Ionut Ciobanu
