Tales From My Grandmother (The god of the sea's herdsman)

Once upon a time, there was a town called Agbayun, which was located in the coastal regions of western parts of Africa. Agbayun was a prosperous town and many people from faraway villages arriving daily, in hopes of getting a piece of the fortunes of the town.

In Agbayun, there lived a man called Omilani. Like several other inhabitants of Agbayun, Omilani had migrated to there in search of greener pastures. Like he had being cursed by the gods, luck did not shine on Omilani. He had tried his hands at various ventures, all to no avail. He found it difficult to adequately provide for himself, despite the prosperity of the town.

Omilani took up fishing as a trade and worked very hard, all in a bid to change his luck. He drove his canoe out unto the sea, every morning and evening but he was never able to make good catches. "If there are any gods, they are definitely unfair" is the thought that ususally pervaded his mind whenever he thought about his misfortune.

One day, Omilani went fishing. He rowed from dawn till evening but he did not catch a single fish. He had rowed his canoe farther than he had ever ventured but it seemed like the fishes were on holiday and had decided not to leave their abodes that day.

Just when he was about to turn back and head for home, Omilani saw a strange sight. He saw what appeared to be cattle grazing beneath the surface of the water. He bent down to have a closer look and fell into the water. He tried to swim back to the surface but a strange force kept pulling him back and he eventually sank to the bottom of the sea.

He was pulled by the strange force, to the home of the god of the sea. He narrated his ordeals to the god, who took pity on him and made him his herdsman. Omilani lived among the sea folk in contentment. There was not a thing that he desired that he did not get.

After some years, Omilani was no longer contented with his life in the sea. He approached the sea-god and expressed his desire to return to the land of men. The god was at first reluctant to let him go but finally agreed to let Omilani go on the condition that he would not tell anyone of all that he had encountered. Omilani swore to secrecy and was sent back to his canoe which had remained where it drowned years ago. The canoe was filled with several precious stones, which Omilani sold upon his arrival at the town.

Omilani became a very rich man and had all that he wantd. In the whole of Agbayun, there was no man as rich as he was, not even the king. He lent out money to kings and was a very popular man

One day, Omilani got drunk at a party and got into a fight with another very wealthy man, who claimed to be more wealthy than he was. Omilani was infuriated and started to boast of all that he had. Eventually, he said "Do you know who I am? I was the herdsman to the god of the sea. I have wined and dined with him and the noble folk of the sea." Immediately, Omilani slumped and died, because he had broken his vow to the sea god.

Thank you for sparing your time to go through this. I remain your humble little boy.
