Carina’s Pillars of Destruction: Images of greater resolution than ever before have been captured by ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array - an astronomical interferometer of radio telescopes in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.

Forming high-mass stars have a significant effect on their natal environment. Their feedback pathways, including winds, outflows, and ionising radiation, shape the evolution of their surroundings which impacts the formation of the next generation of stars. They create or reveal dense pillars of gas and dust towards the edges of the cavities they clear.
Out of the chaos involved in the formation of high-mass stars come the beautiful pillar structures seen at the rims of the ionised bubbles produced when the stars feed radiation back into their environment. The structure and dynamics of these pillars can tell us about the past, present and future star-formation in the region, and are naturally produced in simulations of ionisation feedback. When young massive stars reach the main sequence, their intense radiation begins to ionise and destroy the parent molecular cloud. In combination with the original cloud structure and properties, the way this feedback proceeds influences star formation efficiency on a range of scales.

Mars once had salt lakes that are similar to those on Earth and has gone through wet and dry periods, according to an international team of scientists that includes a Texas A&M University College of Geosciences researcher. Marion Nachon, a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M, and colleagues have had their work published in the current issue of Nature Geoscience. The team examined Mars’ geological terrains from Gale Crater, an immense 95-mile-wide rocky basin that is being explored with the NASA Curiosity rover since 2012 as part of the MSL (Mars Science Laboratory) mission. The results show that the lake that was present in Gale Crater over 3 billion years ago underwent a drying episode, potentially linked to the global drying of Mars.
