Daylight saving time.
Just a quick thought on Daylight Saving Time:
I'm a defender of the status quo because I like my longer summer nights and earlier winter sunrises. And Glen Whitman makes the "formal" case above (noting that it is not a complete cost-benefit, just an argument for the benefits).
But here's the real issue: humans want a regularized natural world but as we've spread across the planet, we can't regularize the differences between being closer or farther from the equator, or from being east or west in our human-created time zones. The tradeoffs associated with DST are really unsolvable given that most people want to structure their days in largely the same way (and don't want to go to some universal time thing where the West Coast has a 5 to 2 work day to stay in sync with the 8 to 5 day on the East Coast). It still matters to us when the sun rises and sets relative to our work day.
There's really no solution without a major trade-off here. And the debate over whether the benefits are worth the real costs is not objectively resolvable. Much depends on where you live and what you value.

I'm in Brisbane, Australia. We get sunrise at 4 am and sunset at 7:30 pm in the summer. An extra hour of darkness in the morning and an extra hour of light in the evening would be great.
I have a friend who can't sleep when it is light. He is forced out of bed at 4 because he can't get back to sleep. He should invest in some decent curtains. Then again, he may never wake up.
