Dolly was cloned at the Roslin Institute (part of the University of Edinburgh), a livestock research institute in Scotland. Dolly was created by a group of researchers led by British embryologist Jan Wilmut. Funding for Dolly's cloning was provided by PPL Therapeutics and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Dolly the sheep was named after Dolly Parton.
Dolly was named after Dolly Parton, a famous country singer who created many classic songs such as I Will Always Love You, Jolene and Multicoloured Coat. According to Wilmut, the reason is that "Dolly comes from milk cells, and perhaps there is no more impressive pair of mammary glands than Dolly Parton."

Dolly was born in July 1996, but her existence became known only a year later, on February 22, 1997. At that time, Dolly attracted a lot of media attention and caused a sensation; TIME magazine published an article about Dolly and called her the "discovery of the year" in the scientific community. Since then, Dolly has been called "the most famous sheep in the world."
