VLOG 28 - Why is it so Hard to be Good at Both Business and Music?

in #music7 years ago (edited)

It's rare for one individual to have skills both for business and for music...

Most people pick one and get insanely good at it. Or they have both for a while, then quit one to free up more time for the other joys of life.

A rare breed has both, these are the unicorns of music.

Why? What's up with this?

For one thing, there is very little synergy between business skill and music skill..

Do you find it difficult to do both business and art for your craft? How do you deal with it?

p.s. sorry about the extra photo at the start of this thumbnail - it's to prevent a Steemit glitch I encountered w/ the photo next to this post's title in the feed.

I think its due to motivation. Good business people are driven by different things than artists (I know Im generalising and its only my opinion- I accept I am neither). I have no idea why but I think this is why musicians are often not interested in churning out pophits etc, whereas manufactured bands who are managed by the business often dowell, whilst producing complete dross!

It seems like some bands are pure business, where every single decision is based on what will earn more money!

I had the same question. I think it is because creative people have a hard time sitting down and doing the administrative work that it takes to run a business. I struggled with that when I owned a bar. I was more interested in how things looked and the events we were throwing. But because I knew how important it was to stay focused I forced myself to do all my bookkeeping and planning two days a week.

Is it just because administrative work is... boring?

Pretty much lol... I hate it. But I have to be that guy.

Steve Vai recently mentioned this topic in an interview. He said creative people's minds are just wired differently than business people's. I'm pretty good at playing guitar but terrible at business (I can't even make any money on steemit). Creative tasks are interesting to me while business tasks I find extremely boring.

Vai is a great example of a guy who seems to handle both well, since he's always doing those big tours where he headlines and has all the big opening acts like Wylde and Malmsteen. Interesting that he thinks that way too.

If your art is good enough it will turn into a business by itself, imo...
A lot of mediocre and untalented people running around feeling they are entitled to success....

I agree with you! After all people want to hear good music and see good art.
