2018-02-15: Deadlift

Shallow Thoughts

We're on to day 5 of enjoying Sunday's pulled beef, and we're nowhere near getting sick of it. Today my wife put together a delicious Tex-Mex spread for lunch:

We're down to our last serving in the fridge, I'm surprised 7 lbs went that fast. I'll be back at Costco this weekend!

Deep Thoughts

I had never attempted a barbell deadlift prior to 13 Feb 2018. For years I have seen the exercise done in countless crossfit videos, and it looks like a recipe for herniated discs and chronic pain. However, I've been doing kettlebell deadlifts for a few months at 35lbs with a focus on keeping proper form, and I can honestly say the back/core strength that it builds is very useful for "Dad stuff" like pickup up my daughters and letting them ride on my shoulders. Lately that 35lbs is starting to feel a bit light, so I want to get a heavier kettlebell, but I also wanted to try a "real" deadlift. It just so happens that the karate dojo my daughters attend on Tuesdays/Thursdays has a weight room that's open to parents. So I gave it a shot:

For a real weightlifter this is a comically light weight (115lbs), but again, my focus is getting proper form/technique down so that I can commit to this for the long haul. On Tuesday I did a couple reps and it didn't feel quite right in my lower back so I stopped and asked the internet what I should do. The internet brought me here. I followed their advice about foot positioning and thinking of the exercise as a push with the legs and hips instead of a pull with the arms and back, and suddenly the deadlift is a magical exercise. In 10 minutes I finished 5 circuits of 5 deadlifts and 5 pull-ups and got a massive boost of all those high energy hormones that flood our bodies when we lift heavy things. And most importantly, no pain! I think I'll be adding

The only drawback? Between my morning kettlebell circuit, my lunchtime dog walk, and the deadlifts, my stomach told my brain I deserved infinite calories for dinner, so I ate half a pizza ;-P So much for tightening up the diet! I promise I'll be good tomorrow.

good description of your workouts and on what basis you do it, I want to tell you that I recently started doing exercises too and since I see that you really have knowledge to be able to guide someone who wants to start changing their physical state a bit, I would be very pleased if you could help me in that! Have a good night friend :)

I've found that doing the same workout routine gets easy/boring, I need to change it up to engage both my mind and some untapped muscle groups. It was a good experiment, and I'll keep pushing it, but I will definitely be careful!

yeah..! and u may take some advice from professional trainers to mix up ur daily freehand workout routine..!

The food looks very delicious did you make that yourself? Well-informed article UpVoted

I smoked the pulled beef on the Big Green Egg, and my wife put together the array of Tex-Mex sides, so I'll have to call it a team effort ;)

'Dad stuff' sounds interesting. best of luck @grolelo

"Dad stuff" is very physically taxing, especially with my kids! Carrying them when they're sleeping, carrying them on my shoulders, playing tag in the park, practicing tennis strokes, etc. And then I still need enough energy left over to do my job and write a blog! ;-P

Looks like you always keep your weight. Regular exercise can lose weight. Especially when lifting weights will burn fat in the body. The meat dishes seem very tasty 😊👍. Thanks for sharing @grolelo. May be always successful for you my friend.

My body does a pretty decent job of maintaining my weight - I think avoiding sugary drinks and fast food gives me a good baseline to work with. Now I'm just hoping to get a bit stronger!

May you be stronger and happier in doing your work. Good luck always for you @grolelo.

ohh you impress me, you have a very healthy life !! haha and every now and then a pizza does not fall badly to the body !! success continues like this, I also started the gym a little while ago and I hope to continue giving it strong

Thanks! The pizza ended up being a minor blip, I'm right back on track with the diet now. Glad to hear you started up at the gym recently, please post about it!

I agree nothing wrong with a cheat meal every now and then. Just make sure it doens't become a habit. LOL

Yes, soon I will be making friends! thank you very much

You already have a friend in me! (Woody Voice)

I understand how difficult it can be to work out and being a father. I have to workout when my son is asleep. I have been focusing on my core and my chest lately. Just keep pushing through and the more you Deadlift the better your technique will become. Practice makes perfect!
BTW i'll definitely support you along the way. I would recommend you take a before pic so you can see your progress.

Yeah, late workouts are mentally tough, I'm glad I was able to swap them to the mornings while my daughters are at school. I'll definitely keep working at the deadlifts, they seem like such a fundamental weightlifting activity that would be great to master.

I did take a "before" pic prior to my Day 1 workout, hopefully the "after" shot on day 42 actually looks like an "after"!

Thanks for the support!

Yeah having kids and working out can be challenging. You just need to fit it in somehow. Getting a great workout will give you the energy to get through the day.
Practice makes perfect and i am sure you nail the technique in no time.
Good for you I promise you the before will look different. Small changes are still changes in my eyes.
No problem! This is what i'm here for to support and encourage others to achieve their goals and vise versa.
