Wonder Woman (film): A great "origin" story

in #movies6 years ago

I have a love/hate relationship with super-hero movies in the past 5 years or so. For one thing, I believe they make entirely too may of them but I can understand why they do so. I mean, if you could get a 400% R.O.I. on a tried-and-true formula, even if said formula is overused, wouldn't you continue to do so?

Now, just like the Black Panther story, the origin of the Amazon women is completely impractical but since this is a super-hero movie that isn't meant to be based in reality - I"m ok with it. An island hidden from the rest of the planet that once you leave (if you are an inhabitant) you can never return to and while i am sure someone out there can explain why it is that some WW1 people end up stumbling upon the island, i don't really understand how it is that they passed through to the Amazon Island dimension but i guess they needed to in order for Wonder Woman to feel compelled to leave (who is actually named Diana and unless i wasn't paying attention, is never actually referred to as "WW" in the movie at all.

I'll be honest and say that I never knew much about her, so if this movie stays honest to the comic book lore then I can honestly say that I learned a lot and so will you if you are into these kind of films. I found it to be significantly more interesting than say "Thor" which was a bit too convoluted for my liking.

The cinematography was very well done and one thing I really appreciated about DIana is that fact that even though she is a "super-hero" she isn't impractically omnipotent. She experiences difficulties getting past machine gun fire, snipers, and grenades and what not and I thought this was a nice touch that she on occasion needs some help.

I suppose the love story was a bit unnecessary but it was always going to happen. Another thing that I didn't like was the fact that all of the people that accompany her can see that she is otherworldly and extremely powerful but yet they continually tell her that what she wants to do is not possible.

This results in her going off on her own and getting it done anyway.

Overall, i really liked this film and thought it was not just a lot of fun, but also very informative for any comic book nerds out there. Perhaps that is just for me because I never much cared for wonder woman in a comic book sense and therefore never bothered to learn about her. The action comes at a steady pace and the story is very rarely boring. Of course a bunch of critics tried to turn this into some sort of social justice something or other but i'm pretty much GTFOH about all that action. I recommend that you see this movie if you are one of the few people on the planet that haven't done so yet. Spoiler alert - Diana is immortal :P

When watching this film, I always imagined another film. Moreover, that is "The Fifth Element". Leeloo was also created to protect humanity, it is a pure, uncluttered ideal. Strong, smart, instantly learning new, but seeing our world for the first time. Leeloo had Korben Dallas, Diana has her Steve and they are the first to touch the goddess, her first Magi, her flock, amazed at the greatness of her spirit, her nobility and beauty.
Diana goes through the same crisis of faith in humanity as Leeloo – are we worthy of salvation, is it possible to save us from ourselves. It is also terrified of war and hatred in the hearts of people, of the willingness to destroy and to suffer. Moreover, it evokes the same response as Leeloo in its time. Moreover, the fact that both are perfect does not make them Mary sue (a hero incapable of making a mistake or in any form of being defeated)-this absoluteness is justified by both the plot and the demands of the story. As in the case of Leeloo, Diana landed her naivety and ignorance of our world, she often behaves like a child and constantly demands to take her to war, because there people suffer.
Moreover, it is a pity that it lacks some key scenes of "the Fifth Element". The picture would be so much stronger if we saw Diana, who was still defeated by enemies, wounded, crying and defenseless – like Leeloo in the ventilation system. In need have support. This would not detract from the image of a strong independent woman, as in the case of the heroine Milla Jovovich (God, how she was good in this role), but would allow us to understand the limits of Diana's capabilities, to see a person in her even more clearly.

great follow-up buddy :)

For me the film is still burdened by many of its vices: unjustified slow cameras, artificial poses and planes, overdoses of special effects, some unfortunately underused secondary and more slow cameras!!!. Fortunately, everything else is good: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, some original ideas, action scenes and, yes, again, Gal Gadot. hehehe

After the struggles DC has had with anything other than Batman films, this was a welcome surprise.

Hopefully Aquaman and Shazam are more like Wonder Woman and less like Suicide Squad.

Nice article! The love story does serve the needs of the plot IMO, although I agree the same could be achieved by other means.
I've also posted an article a few days ago about "Wonder Woman" and another movie, with a video I edited:

You can watch it in 1080p by selecting "source video" in the player settings.

I hope it's not considered bad practice in Steemit to insert links to other posts in comments, that's usually how social networks work.

That was actually my first post in DTube-Steemit (it is so far my only one) and apart the days it took me to get to the final edit, it took me a while to post it - and I uploaded it more than once - before finding a tutorial on a workaround to the "unknown error", which I'm linking here so other Steemit users reading here and wanting to post their first video on DTube won't go through that experience:
How to Fix Unknown Error When Posting on DTube.
