Cyntoia Brown murdered a guy and the media is applauding her early release from prison... wtf?

in #life5 years ago

I would imagine that even though most people haven't thought about this in some time they probably have some memory of the initial situation that resulted in Cyntoia going to prison in the first place: She was a 16-year old prostitute who killed a guy in his sleep and then stole his money, guns, and car. She got caught, and was sentenced to something like 55 years in prison. She was released recently, many years before the end of her sentence.

hooray! She's out early... Can the guy she shot in the back of the head while he was asleep get out early too?

Look, I'm not trying to say that a person can't be reformed by the prison system because I truly believe that it is a wonderful situation if and when genuine reform actually happens to a person that ends up incarcerated. I celebrate that because in my mind at least, that is the entire idea behind the prison system (or at least it should be.) Cyntoia may very well be a very different person than she was when she was sentenced at 16 years of age and I whole-heartedly wish her the best and sincerely hope that she is a better / reformed person given the fact that she has been in a cage for 15 years.

However, I can not believe the attention that this woman is getting and how they are actually trying to paint her as a "victim" in the entire thing.

Cyntoia Brown claims that on the night that she shot and killed Johnny Allen that he had hired her for sex work. As dirty as that sounds and the fact that prostitution is a crime in the United States by her own admission she lied to him about how old she was and in the end he was kinda looking to be more of a white knight than a typical "john."

They didn't have sex and he was discussing with her ways that he could help her to leave this life of being a street worker and while he was asleep she shot him in the back with a gun that she brought with her. She would later claim that she was afraid for her life and was acting in self-defense but the crime-scene analysis totally did not back her story up. She was dead to rights and literally "caught red handed." She had no signs of a struggle, she hadn't slept with him, and there was no indication that there was any sort of argument between them. She murdered him in order to steal his guns, his wallet ($172), and his truck. She was caught at a budget hotel later the same day.

The thing that really grinds my gears isn't that she committed a crime, it isn't even that she was released early (because I believe that a person can reform themselves in a considerably shorter amount of time than "life"), the problem I have is that she has a book out and the media is parading her around like she is some sort of figurehead that is to be admired. Some outlets are even attempting to paint her as some sort of victim of a tarnished judicial system.

She killed a guy! She admitted to this. This is not someone to be admired in any capacity but the system, at least the way that I can see it is actually attempting to financially reward this lady for something that she definitely should have endured in that she deserved to go to prison for ending the life of another human being.

The book details her tough upbringing and of course attempts to push the blame onto male figures that were prominent in her life namely a pimp simply referred to as "Cutthroat" who is entirely to blame (according to her donkey story) for the fact that she decided to murder someone in their sleep. Consequently, "Cuttthroat" was killed in a gang-related incident while Cyntoia was in jail.

Do i think that Cyntoia should rot in prison? No, I don't. I don't like the idea of paying for people to live somewhere rent-free when it is conceivable that they have been reformed and can now become decent members of society. What i DO have a problem with is the fact that the media and a lot of the public is trying to treat this woman as though she is the victim of something.

She killed a guy in his sleep.

She wasn't being attacked and she wasn't a prisoner. If anything Johnny Allen seemed like a bit of a creep seeing as how he was in his 40's trying to chat up a teen but also didn't seem to be a terrible guy... He certainly didn't deserve to die and he wasn't taking advantage of Cyntoia. She propositioned HIM as CCTV footage can verify.

Cyntoia was released early by having been granted clemency by the governor of Tennessee after public attention was brought to the matter by celebrities such as Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Snoop Dogg, and Lebron James. Many of these inept celebrities also attempted to caricature her as an innocent victim that didn't deserve to be in jail at all.

my 20's were also a lot of fun

The lead investigator on her case, Charles Robinson, dismisses all claims of Cyntoia's attempt of victim-hood stating that "she was not a child sex slave as her advocates would like you to believe. Cyntoia Brown's motive for murdering Johnny Allen in his sleep was robbery."

Charles Robinson is black... just to get the potential racism horse-shit outta the way.

I'm all for this woman being on parole... Honestly, I am. But to celebrate this vile woman who murdered someone who was being nice to her so that she could steal $172 from him is insanity. To purchase her book and praise her for being a victim of society is lunacy. To put her up on a pedestal and suggest that she is someone to be admired or some sort of leader is idiocy.... and unfortunately, a lot of people are doing exactly that.

Sort:

All this could have been easily explained with the story fitting certain ideological agendas. Yet, the phenomenon isn't anything new. While in law school, one of my professors was describing somewhat similar story about Jack Henry Abbott, convict who had been serving long prison sentence for arson, armed robbery and manslaughter. In 1977 he heard about The Executioner's Song, book by esteemed novelist Norman Mailer about infamous killer Gary Gilmore. He began to write letters to Mailer about his own criminal experience. Famous writer apparently discovered great literary talent in the author of those letters and began campaign for his release, which was joined by writer Jerzy Kosinski and many other prominent intellectuals and celebrities of the time. The campaign succeeded and Abbott was released in 1981, shortly before the publication of his book In the Belly of the Beast. On the very same day the book received glowing review in New York Times, Abbott went to a bar where a waiter said something Abbott didn't like. It ended with a waiter being stabbed to death, Abbott arrested and put behind bars for the rest of his life, with some 7.5 million US$ of book revenue going to the family of his victim. Many years later, Mailer describing the episode as "something he wasn't proud of".

jeez, that's a pretty tragic story. I love how Mailer doesn't seem to be terribly remorseful by just not being proud of it. Some people unfortunately, simply can't be trusted to play with others.

Crazy times with crazy heroes.

A murder and freedom earlier than the term is over...a murder! Not a fighting or even stealing, a murder!

Don't understand it either...and a book. My god, it seems to me now all hyped persons are writers, no matter they are victims or killers.

Absolutely do! I Agree with this!

hooray! She's out early... Can the guy she shot in the back of the head while he was asleep get out early too?

I mean, technically, he did get out early too, in a way.

Wink wink, nudge nudge, wubba lubba dub dub suicide/death jokes are the best, baby.

ahhhh... i see what you did there :)

I am with you on this. I think it is right that someone could be reformed even though I don't like what she gas done. I am one for the death penalty when evidence is 100 percent and no doubts. There is no ways she should be promoting a book with the help of the media as she is a criminal and murderer and no saint. All proceeds from the book should go to the family of the victim.

this story made me really upset. I already hate most media but some of the showcases she is getting on things like daytime talk shows is just maddening. What the hell has happened to the world?

It doesn't make sense to me and how can they get away with what they are doing. Problem is people are so gullible and are way too soft and get manipulated by the media.

by the way that idea for the proceeds going to the family would be a great idea but well, you know, that aint gonna happen.

He has sponsored a young girl and has done a post about it already. A few of us have chipped in to help already.

lol, i think you got two different threads mixed up, but i'm pretty sure i know what you are talking about.

Howdy gooddream! I couldn't agree more, this is disgusting the way they are making her out to be the victim. Great write up.

That's not the way I heard the story at all. I am not arguing with you, I am just saying at this point, how do you know what to believe? It is hard to be an informed concerned and active citizen when you think you are doing what is right only to be told you are wrong. So then you change our thinking only to be told that now you are wrong again. At this point we might as well just not care about anyone else and live lives of solitude. I seriously wouldn't be surprised to find that all the facts you just posted have been refuted a month from now and there is a new theory about how things went down.

These are statements from court documents:

Upon being put in holding she threatened a prison nurse saying "I shot that man in the back of the head one time, bitch, I’m gonna shoot you in the back of the head three times. I’d love to hear your blood splatter on the wall.”

In a recorded conversation with her adopted mother she said of Allen "I executed him"

A fellow inmate says that Cyntoia Brown stated she killed Allen "Just to see what it was like to kill someone"

She can be reformed after all of this and as far as her being an involuntary prostitute for Kutthroat fella, that is tragic and all, but it doesn't give someone a free pass to kill people.

I'm happy she is out after 15 years and all and I sincerely hope that she really is reformed. However, i can't see any real reason why anyone should be praising her...

This might not be the same one I was thinking of. I guess I totally glossed over the part about the 15 years thing. I think the one I saw was much more recent than this. For some reason the name seemed familiar though. Anyway, if it was this one, I will admit I fully bought into the lie and again, I have to point out it becoming hard to know who and what you can trust for sources of information. In all honesty, apathy is starting to sound really nice...

isn't it though? (about the apathy starting to sound nice).... One of the major things I like about living over here is that I don't have to be involved in these things (but still choose to!) oh no!

Haha, yeah, it goes against everything I believe as a compassionate human. I really want this world to be a better place for the future generations, then I look around sometimes and I am like "Meh".

Wow, this is pretty disturbing a cold-blooded murderer being turned into a celebrity. It seems we have been living in this society for years now, whereby we celebrate serial killers and violent criminals.

I agree, she can rehabilitate, but don't put her on a pedestal :-(

Cg

Well, it looks like she is making the best of her situation with writing the book and all of that. An opportunist at heart.
I do not agree with letting a murderer released soon, but hey, Mossack and Fonseca (the lawyers from the Panama papers) were released in three months.
