Balls of Glory Pinball FX3 (PC/PS4) - Is it worth the 5-10 dollars?

in #games5 years ago

The Zen Pinball tables are nothing new to gaming (particularly for PC gamers) as they are pretty much the only players in the game. There are a few others out there, but Zen seems to get all the copyright stuff and that tends to make their games more enjoyable.

The initial download is free and most tables have a demo that you can play a little bit of before making a decision.

I am always apprehensive of these "packs" because normally they throw one good table in with some garbage and the "Balls of Glory" pack - which includes tables for Family Guy, American Dad!, Bob's Burgers, and Archer - seems to be exactly that.

These add-on packs are all part of the FX3 game and there are an absolute TON of tables, many of which can be picked up for like $2 or even at a bigger discount if you buy the packs.

I caught a 50% off special and was able to get the entire pack for less than $5, so i figured "what the hell" because even if it sucks it is only $5.

There are a lot of pluses and minuses about all of these, or just digital pinball in general. For one thing, the Zen pinball games tend to focus on making the pinball realistic, as in, it looks like you are actually standing at a pinball table, which is good in a way and kind of crap in another.

The downside of this simulation is the fact that sometimes the angles make it very difficult to see what you are supposed to be aiming at (i use the static one where your point-of-view is as if you were standing at the end.) For example on the Family Guy table, the top flipper, which is the only way you can access the "Chris" ramp is very difficult to see at all. After 2 hours I only successfully hit the Chris ramp once.

You can change the camera angle to follow the ball, but good grief, who's gonna do that?

There are certain things you can do in order to activate side games, which likely wouldn't be possible on a real pinball table such as when you take to the skies as Stewie to have a showdown with his ginger brother "Bertram." While this is initially complicated because you still only use the flipper buttons to control the helicopter, it is a nice little break from the normal pinball action.

The rest of the game is filled with various comedic statements made by all your favorite Family Guy characters and this is where Zen shines over pretty much everyone else in the digital pinball realm. Zen acquires the copyright for most of their tables and the voices and characters are really from the shows (or movies.) The music, the characters, and even some custom voice-work designed specifically for this game are all included.

I'm a big fan of Family Guy, so this alone made it worth continuing to play just to what sort of ludicrous stuff was going to happen next.

From the official Playstation channel

As that trailer shows, there are 3-D things that happen on the table that wouldn't be possible with an actual pinball machine and that is kind of fun although watching it can actually result in you losing the ball.

The games are somewhat realistic as far as pinball physics are concerned and this includes the fact that you are occasionally going to get completely screwed over as the ball heads down those dreaded side lanes for a loss.

Another interesting feature that is built into the game is that you can actually "level up" the table with increased play, which will increase your ability to have more balls and prolong gameplay. Therefore, there is a lot of replay value because the game becomes easier as time goes by.

Bob's Burgers was a pretty good table, but since I have never watched a single episode of this show, a lot of the jokes are lost on me. However, it was pretty funny and has inspired me to have a look at the show.

I only played the Archer table for a few rounds because it is terrible, just as I expected anytime i buy a package table game. If you look online almost everyone complains that Archer appears rushed and unfinished and was simply a cash grab. Basically, it was thrown in because it is also a cartoon and the table sucks and they know it.

For $5, this package has already been worth it in my book as I played just Family Guy for around 2.5 hours last night and at no point was I bored. I only stopped because my hand was cramping on the X-box controller since those are the only buttons you use in the game.

I don't think i would be very happy about having paid $10 for this package, but seeing as how there are specials on Zen tables pretty much all the time, I think at 50% off it is a good value. Of course you would need to be interested in pinball for any of this advice to be applicable.

Sort:

Bobs Burgers is worth a watch imo.

Spend a lot of time playing pinball on pc and tablet but so far not on a console.
I have not seen a real new pinball machine for quite a while and I am curious what kind of sidegames they can offer now as I expect them to be a lot better now.

My 2 favorite machines are the Sopranos and the Indina Jones Flipper.

Everyone keeps telling me to watch Bob's Burgers.. I'm going to have to watch it at some point. I'm missing too many references, myself...

I've never played either one of those titles but I do love a good pinball machine. We never see them in Thailand probably for a lot of reasons. The main one being that they are made in USA for the most part and are quite delicate, lots of pieces inside and i would imagine there isn't a single pinball machine technician in this country. I know a guy who is a tech and he showed me what goes on below the surface on these machines and my goodness they are complicated.

there are some arcade machines in the malls here but mostly they are older.

I feel like going there now....

The high cost of pinball machines is probably another reason. In the U.S. you see them occasionally but like arcades in general these days, they are few and far between. New tables come along once in a while but I don't think they typically have large production runs. Probably in the neighbor hood of < 10,000 most of the time. Sometimes much less.

I tend to seek out venues that carry tables from the 70's and 80's. There were so many classics from that era, like Taxi, Gor-Gar, Orbitor-1, Black Knight, Tales of the Arabian Nights, Elvira and the Party Monsters, and the like.

I was just scaling through the package and $5 at the end like you mentioned is a good buy, I'll likely change the view, I think some people might still do it. Don't you think?

well, pinball games aren't for everyone and to be honest i would prefer if they didn't actually try to make it like a "real" table. I miss the old pinball simulators like Devils Crush and Alien Crush, but it has been a really long time since anyone made something like that.

well, pinball games aren't for everyone

You're right about this.

Well it seem you rather prefer them classy and old like back in the days?, that's why I think you'd pay anything for Alien Crush, I mean the old Alien Crush

I had no clue they made pinball packages like this for the Xbox. I don't know if it is happening as much over there, but over here arcade bars have been and are continuing to be the rage. So a bar will get a ton of old arcade games and pinball tables and allow you to play for free as long as you are drinking. Some of the places always charge for pinball and some of them are free. I think they are concerned that because the ratio of pinball tables to arcade games is so low the tables might get monopolized. It is a pretty cool concept. They even have special days on the weekends where they encourage adults to bring in their kids and play the games.

Although @flipstar has said he has seen a few in the south, i have honestly never seen a pinball machine in this country at all.

The arcades we did have were merely rigged PS4's with timers and even though this is horribly illegal, there are a lot of things that are illegal in Thailand that are done anyway.

The arcades i have been to here seem to focus on the basketball games (like you are physically throwing an actual ball into an actual hoop) and those dance dance revolution type games. Sometimes they will have something with guns and zombies. The arcade at my local mall is massive but they don't have even one pinball machine. Lame!

I have heard of these free places and I would love to go to one. When i was last in NYC i was really excited about going to Dave and Busters only to be really nonplussed about their game choices.

Then i found a pinball only arcade in Manhattan that you paid $15 an hour for unlimited play but they had no food or drinks... wtf?

Yeah, Dave and Busters is kind of lame. I went to one in Columbus a while ago and the games were just meh. Nothing like the old classics that they have at the other places. If you have a machine with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Super Off-Road you are good in my book. That is pretty awesome about the place in Manhattan, but no food and drinks is a definite downer! Are there still companies actively making tables or is it all just maintenance and repair these days?

You might like Round 1, then. They tend to have a few older fighting games, alongside the more recent stuff.

(You really should try Maximum Tune 5. Just saying)

I've added that to my notes!

Sup Dork?!? Enjoy the Upvote!!! Keep up with the dorky content for more love!!!

I usually set the view to 2 and never look back. You get a full view of the table, like you're actually standing over it.

I'm a little miffed that they swiped the Williams licenses from Pinball arcade, but their rendition of Theatre of Magic is pretty spot on.

i will try that new view perspective and see if it can make me like it more. I just tried to play "Doom" and had no idea whatsoever as to what was going on :)

Oh, Doom is a fantastic table. I really like that one!
