127 Hours (film): nerve-racking winner

in #getyerlearnon6 years ago (edited)

Anyone familiar with my stuff already knows that I am a big fan of films that are at least based on actual events. The real-life person depicted in this movie by James Franco (his name is Aron Ralston) has stated that with the exception of one or two minor details, the film is completely true-to-life.

Aron Ralston is a free-spirited mountaineer and overall lover of nature. One day he decides to go biking and exploring in a national park in Utah. He finds an area he has not yet explored in his previous visits to the park and decides to climb down. He stumbles and loosens a large bolder which crashes on his right arm, trapping him. He tries calling out for help only to realize that he is hopelessly alone.

Being quite the naturalist, he uses the few tools he has at his disposal in an attempt to free himself from this position including chipping away at the rock and also a futile attempt to make some sort of level to move the boulder. During all of this he is keeping a video diary because, you know, pics or it didn't happen.

As time passes (bet you can't guess how much time in total!) he starts to reflect on all the dumb decisions he made in order to end up in this predicament such as not telling anyone where he was going and that his own adventurous lifestyle is the reason why it is unlikely he is going to be found. Days pass and he starts to hallucinate especially once he starts to run out of water and is subjected to consuming his own urine to survive.

He eventually decides that cutting his own arm off is the only way out. However, he realizes that the blade is not sharp enough to cut through bone and has to make some pretty gruesome decisions along the way. This is where the movie becomes a bit difficult to watch and Aron (James Franco) doesn't even cry out in pain much. Aron Ralston insists that this is an accurate depiction of what actually happened.

This film was nominated for a bunch of awards including "best actor" at the Oscars. I truly felt as though Franco deserved this nomination (he didn't win) because any accomplished actor will tell you that acting on your own is far more difficult than acting with other people. Just ask Tom Hanks about "Castaway."

I also wonder how the producers and script writers must have toiled over how they were going to turn something such as one person being trapped by a boulder into a 1.5 hour movie. I guess I am not creative enough because I probably would have said "we can't" and that would have been it. However, this ended up being an extraordinary tale of courage that stays entertaining from start to finish.

9 / 10

Very accurate from the actual story I have to say. Well portrayed film and it was so intense. Let's start from the actor . The main character Franco gives us chill with his superb one man masterpiece role. Franco's performance left me completely dumbfounded. The film was based on a real life tragedy which makes it even interesting and relatable to the viewers. It was something that the viewers would be looking forward and anticipating if he will survive against all odds or not. Surprisingly fun and breathtaking events. The phasing of the scene were on que, perfectly organized.

127 Hours" is like an exercise in conquering the unfilmable. Boyle uses some magnificent cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle and Enrique Chediak, establishing the vastness shoot in Utah wilderness. The soundtrack music was so intense which adds excitement upon watching him struggle.

There are a lot of things we can reflect from the film like never giving up no matter what. At times we are faced with adversity and challenges we must keep our faith and hope alive. Facing our fears and pushing ourself to the limits are some of the things I can say a worth reflecting for. Same as you are I would rate this film a 9/10 stars overall. The storyline, casting, cinematography and the overall impact of the film was superb. Highly recommended!

incredible follow-up, pal!

I came into this movie with high expectations. Danny Boyle, who brought us 28 DAYS LATER and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE had a lot to live up to with the quality of prior movies, and he did not disappoint. He brought the challenge of creating an interesting movie based on our main character being immobile to life, and captivating it was. Being stuck with our main character the entire duration of the film was anything but tedious, as we follow the thoughts of canyoneer Aron Ralston (James Franco) as he gets trapped under a rock while exploring the beautiful sights of Utah. The camera does a fabulous job taking us everywhere a wandering mind might migrate in a situation such as this.

The human connection element was most fascinating, as we wonder what we would do if placed in a similar situation. We are really "with" Ralston on his journey, as we see him discover a reason to live and how his life perspective changes, not just how to get free from his predicament. The film manages to stay optimistic and warming, despite the frustration and angst felt by Ralston and viewers. And we certainly thank Boyle for some of the lighter moments that temper the severity of the situation.

Aww this one, i loved it till the very end however at a point in time when he got trapped i scared and anxious to see what will happen next and when he decided to cut his arm i was like hei are you crazy? Do you remember the part when it started raining? I just went like is over now the guys is a goner, is quite amazing how Hollywood can make a movie of a predicament in such long hours, great minds at work

Still one of my favorite movies from that year. Franco is actually a insanely underated artist. Lol This movie gave me so much anxiety. I'm curious to know how you felt about other films where the actor is solo for the majority / entirety - buried - all is lost - maybe Gus Van Sants Gerry.

One of my short first films had only one character on screen for nearly 10 minutes. Was a lot of fun to play within those constraints.

Great review. Thanks for sharing.

Cutting your own hand is terrible choise to make. I need to see that movie, there are so many nice movies, but so little time to watch them all.
