E.T. Phones Home: Says “Buy Mene 24K”
One of the coolest stories I have heard was actually belived to be an urban legend for a couple decades. I can think of very few cases were an urban legend turned out to be true!
Old school video game aficionados like @jimmylin and @goldfashioned might already know where I am headed....
E.T was an epic blockbuster film that came out in 1982. It is one of the highest grossing films ever.
Read all about it here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial
Everyone has heard of E.T. the movie, but not everyone knows the urban legend behind the E.T. the video game.
For a myriad of reasons the video game earned the dubious honor of being known as The Worse Video Game Ever. If thats not enough, an Urban Legend (?) emerged in the 80’s about millions of copies of the game being buried in a landfill in New Mexico.
For years I had heard this story and not really believed it to be true. It just seems so unlikely that someone ordered truckloads of game cartridges literally thrown away and buried.
Of course my interest was piqued by the rumor, but for years and years information was scarce. That is until someone decided to make an entire documentary about the urban legend and attempt to dig up the mythical games.
The documentary is called : Atari: Game Over
SPOILER ALERT
If you plan on watching this documentary, stop reading here. I’ll insert a picture so you don’t accidentally keep reading:
This documentary was excellent and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in:
1.E.T.
2.Video Games
3.Treasure hunts

I’ve already done a spoiler alert so I can show this:
This:
And this:
Folks, this urban legend..... isn’t an urban legend.
It’s true.

Thousands of E.T. game cartridges were buried in a landfill in New Mexico. Even if you ignored my spoiler alert and read without seeing the movie, I still think its worth seeing.
Maybe make it a movie night and see E.T. first to understand why I am inserting this Mene 24 karat gold heart charm:
And this Mene 24k Heart of Gold Ring:
Or I can just show you:
I love this story because it has so many cool elements.... a beautiful movie from childhood, nostalgic video games, a mysterious urban legend and.... buried treasure!
Perhaps the best thing about this story that emerged so many years later is that it keeps the magic of the film going , something new to talk about after all these years.
And who doesnt want to recapture just a bit of their childhood?
What would E.T. have to say about all this?
Just two words...
Good.
