The Cultivated Apothecary: Week 3 Edition 1- Double-Tinctured Feverfew & Bottling Up Lacto-Fermented Raspberry Soda

in #steemitbloggers6 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the latest edition of the Golden D Homestead "The Cultivated Apothecary"!

Let's see what I've been up to today!

It seems as though Mondays are a magical day for me in the Golden D Kitchen. I am constantly looking for new ways to become self-sufficient, find healthier ways of living and learning new skills; plus I love to be able to share my adventures and recipes from my garden and kitchen to yours!

Four days ago I made a recipe for ginger bug so I could start drinking healthier and stop wasting money and to start avoiding future health risks of drinking soda. Yeah... some habits are hard to break

BUT...I am determined!

Lacto-Fermented Raspberry Soda

After making my ginger bug and letting it ferment for three days, I started my lacto-fermented raspberry soda today.

Recipe
16-ounces frozen organic raspberries
1/2 cup pure cane sugar
3/4 ginger bug

Bring raspberries and sugar to slow and steady boil, then simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and cool down to room temperature. Cmbine, in a half gallon to gallon glass jar, the raspberries and 3/4-cup of ginger bug. Fill glass jar almost to the top- leaving about 1-2 inches of breathing room then stir completely.

EVERY day for the next three days, open and release the gases that have built up and stir lacto-fermented soda.

Taste sample after three days to make sure sweetness of soda is what you want, then bottle it up.

Double-Tinctured Feverfew

My feverfew has been growing like crazy this year and I am attempting to harvest as much as I can and preserve it for the next 6-9 months; until it is available again next spring. So I has already made feverfew tincture about five weeks ago and after a ton of research, I decided to make a second batch of feverfew tincture; except I wanted this batch to be double-tinctured; meaning I took some of the tincture from the first brewed batch and added it to a fresh tincture to brew for five more weeks- making it stronger for bad headaches and episodes from my auto-immune disease.

  • See my DTube video on how I accomplished this.

Other uses for Feverfew tincture:

  • Fevers
  • Headaches & migraines
  • As an anti-inflammatory for joints and arthritis
  • Abdominal and digestive issues
  • Gas/bloating
  • Nausea

If you are allergic to daisies, yarrow, chamomile, ragweed or any other flower in the daisy family... DO NOT USE! Also do not use if pregnant.

This is so creative @goldendawne!!!! And very inspiring too! Having a mom like @lizziesworld I was brought up with really healthy dietry habits thankfully, so I dont EVER have ANYTHING carbonated in my fridge (unless Dave bought it lol) Jude and I are both water gluttons - but it is still GREAT to experiment and discover new stuff like this!

Oh yes! I love following and chatting with your mom in the comments- she always has some insightful ideas on her posts.
Unfortunately I am not a BIG water drinker for some reason.. but if it has a little flavor, and some fizz, I am hoping to wean myself off of soda completely.

Is this kind of like a water kefir or kombucha? Nice job on the landscape mode!

You can use water kefir for this recipe too. Even champage yeast or a cultivated whey. I used the ginger bug because I had ginger from my garden.

Thanks- been working on the video set-up!!!
