Grandpa Gotta Cook—Butter Chicken

If At First You Don't Succeed...

I imagine many of you are familiar with the saying, If at first you don't succeed...

No, it doesn't end with, ...go cry to your mother. It states, ...try, try again. Meaning, that just because the first attempt ended in failure, does not mean you are destined to fail every time. However, without doing more, you're not likely to know. You need to keep with it until success is achieved.

With that in mind, I take you back six weeks when I made an Indian dish called Tikka Masala.

You will remember, it didn't turn out according to plan. Way too much cayenne pepper.

At the time, it didn't dawn on me that the part requiring cayenne pepper was homemade curry. Duh! I could have just bought that part if I'd known, and let the experts ensure the cayenne pepper was proportional to the overall taste.

Well, I didn't try Tikka Masala again, but I did cook up some Butter Chicken, which is similar to Tikka Masala, but not as much tomato product, and actual curry seasoning rather than making it myself.

The results? We'll get to those in a minute.

This particular recipe for Butter Chicken was geared to the crockpot. Yep, I dusted off the old slow cooker again. It also called for chicken stock, tomato paste, yellow curry powder, garam masala, ground turmeric, salt, black pepper, chunks of chicken, onions, garlic, ginger, heavy cream, lime juice and brown sugar.

IMG_2299.JPG

You'll notice that butter isn't a part of a recipe for Butter Chicken. Go figure. Perhaps the heavy cream is the butter? There were other recipes that called for butter along with heavy cream, so just to make it live up to its name, I put in a couple of tablespoons of butter.

In following the directions, I got a little ahead of myself. Everything but the heavy cream, lime juice and brown sugar are supposed to be mixed into a bowl and then poured over the chicken chunks. I ended up throwing the heavy cream in, too, and then wondering what that might do to it for the next three and a half hours.

IMG_2295.JPG

The recipe called for four hours on low. It also said twenty minutes of prep. It took me at least forty minutes, plus I started late, so I let the crockpot cook on low for about two hours, then I cranked it up to high for another hour-ish. The chicken needed the extra cooking oomph, since at two hours the chunks were still only partially cooked.

With about twenty or so minutes to go, I started the rice, and then with about five minutes remaining, I put the Naan bread in to warm up. I put in the rest of the ingredients and waited. The rice took a little longer, but about five minutes later, everything was ready to go.

And The Winner Is...

Me! Yes, I'm claiming victory on this one, people. I toned down the curry just a tad, and played up a little bit of the other ingredients that I knew people would like, and voila, it was a hit! My wife immediately said it was very good the moment she tasted it. The youngest son went back for more, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did not hear what the daughter-in-law thought as she was feeding the baby while the rest of us ate. I'll just say she liked it, too.

Objectives in using this recipe were met. Not so much tomato tasting ingredients (6 ounces of paste as opposed to 29 ounces of tomato sauce last time), not so spicy hot that it detracted from the rest of the flavors, and something with butter in it. I don't know if the butter actually came through or not. More butter maybe?

Oh, and having the cream in there cooking for three hours instead of poured in at the end didn't seem to detract from anything. Next time I do it, I will make it the right way to make sure.

You Know It's Good...

I couldn't wait to have more the next day for lunch. Having more Naan bread had little to do with it. I did forego the rice, though. One set of carbs the second time around was more than enough.

I'm glad I decided to try this other dish and find some Indian food my family really likes. Gives us another ethnic food to try on occasion. We could stand a little variety here and there, right?

So, until next time...

...Enjoy!

I always add to that saying a line from a song that I love. "If at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again. You can dust it off and try again, try again."

Anyway, the food looks yum! I could do this but four hours is a long time lol!

Hey, @leeart.

I can see why you like the song. Very nice.

Now, I'm sure there are regular butter chicken recipes where it doesn't take so long to prepare, but since was on low in a crockpot, it just basically sits there doing its thing while I go and do whatever I want. We typically eat around 5 pm or so, or at least that's the target time, so having the crockpot going by 1 pm is when things start to cook.

Ah, got it. I'll google such recipes.

It...well... food never looks good in the pot before cooking, but it does sound like it came out good, and the ingredients not to many. Some recipes have just way to many things in them,. Me I like real real simple. The last picture does look appealing. Have a !BEER to go with the meal.

Hey, @bashadow.

Thanks for the token. :)

Yeah, some food doesn't look all that appetizing at first. I believe it's the heavy cream that's causing some of that in this case. Had I followed the instructions exactly, that would have come in last.

It did turn out very good, and I hope to make it again fairly soon. Maybe mid-September or so.

Hey, @viking-ventures.

It definitely was. Very tasty. I probably could include a little more of the curry next time, but I did like the rest of the ratios of ingredients to one another. Nothing really dominated, but blended together well.

Congratulations grandpa! You did it! Butter Chicken - one of my favourite Indian dishes. But wait! No garlic in the Naan? 😃

We can get Naan with garlic. This didn't have any. There was garlic in the butter chicken, and so I didn't get the Naan with the garlic, partly because of that, partly because prepared bread tends to overdo the garlic. As it is, everything was pretty tasty.

Good job grandpa, I admire your tenacity and ability. I am sure your family appreciated your delicious meal. I just hope your family has the same rules as ours, if you don't cook, you clean. The cook gets to burp! hehe

Hey, @farm-mom.

Well, in reality, I think what I wanted to cook the first go around was butter chicken, but since I didn't know what the names of the dishes were, I went with the one I thought sounded the best. So much for that.

So, anyway, butter chicken it is.

re: same rules

Well, we tend to get a little lawless around here. Too many independent people wanting to do their own thing. I think we sort of have it divided it up among spouses. If I or my wife cooks, then there's the potential the other will do the dishes, as well as with my youngest son and his wife, unless they feel like they were overworked and need a break (he's been off all summer, and but they do have a two year old and a three month old), then my wife will probably end up doing it if I don't get roped in, too.

Hey, @helpiecake.

Thank you. As always, you folks are very much appreciated for the curation service you provide. The chocolate on chocolate cake looks awesome, too!

Sometimes what we need is persistence and perservance to succeed

Hey, @doyi.

I would say in my case, that's the only real recipe for success. Keep doing it until I get it right. Keep doing it after that until I get sick of it and try something else. :)

I can’t decide which part is my favorite, the beginning or the end. Your caption at the end is awesome! I might follow your lead on that one and what about your intro?? “If at first you don’t succeed.” I could probably follow your lead on that one too cuz i thought it went.. you must suck and you might wanna consider doing Anything else. 😉

Great entry per usual, sir. Always a pleasure to hang out with you. Have a nice weekend.

Hey, @dandays.

Well, thank you for the kinds words about the intro and the promo at the end. I try to do something like every week, so new initiates might want to climb aboard the Food Fight Friday express.

The intro seemed appropriate since I was trying Indian food again, albeit a different dish, but you know, that kind of don't back down attitude that seems to pervade the triple F. :)

Of course there will be plenty of times where your ending of the phrase is what people need to hear. Then you can be known forthwith and forever as DreamCrusher X Ultrahype Master Supreme. :)
